Edwards feels that Heurelho Gomes will prove Juande Ramos' most
significant signing this summer.
When Paul Robinson steps out against Croatia next
week, I wonder what thoughts will be going through his mind. Back to the
stadium where his promising career for both club and country was ripped to
shreds after the infamous air shot. I personally have never seen a player's
confidence fall so rapidly and I think I speak for the majority of Spurs fans,
when I say we hope to see him return to his brilliant best, for the country's
sake if anything.
He had to leave Tottenham last season, for everybody's
sake as the last 18 months had cost us dear. Juande Ramos persevered and persevered
but it just wasn't happening for our once ‘Rock' and a parting of ways was a
natural course. We needing to bring in a keeper, who oozed confidence,
commanded that penalty box and give our defence some much needed assurance
behind them.
It is fair to say that when we splashed out £7.8m on Heurelho Gomes, I think I'm right in saying that opinion was mixed. Many saw the Brazilian as somewhat of a clown and a cross between David James and Bruce Grobbelaar, while others saw a top class keeper, who was finally going to bring stability and strength to the backline. I think even those who were sceptical must be having second thoughts, given his performances in the opening games; notably the Chelsea game, where for me he and Woodgate were the best players on the football pitch.
It is fair to say that there is certainly an eccentric side to Gomes, but what is wrong with that. He has a ridiculous amount of confidence and not afraid to take a ball off his defenders head, or clatter into them to gather a cross. It is actually quite refreshing to see a goalkeeper at Spurs who actually comes out of his six yard box at set pieces and as a supporter you no longer fear crosses or set pieces being whipped into the box as you know 9 out of 10 times, Gomes will be onto it. A good goalkeeper is like a 30 goal a season striker; their importance can be as much as 10-15pts extra a season and that is why for me he will prove our most significant arrival this summer.
So what is the verdict on Gomes and have those doubters changed their tune, or do reservations still persist?
