Football FanCast guest columnist Frank Edwards feels that Heurelho Gomes will prove Juande Ramos' most significant signing this summer.

When Paul Robinson steps out against Croatia next week, I wonder what thoughts will be going through his mind. Back to the stadium where his promising career for both club and country was ripped to shreds after the infamous air shot. I personally have never seen a player's confidence fall so rapidly and I think I speak for the majority of Spurs fans, when I say we hope to see him return to his brilliant best, for the country's sake if anything.

He had to leave Tottenham last season, for everybody's sake as the last 18 months had cost us dear. Juande Ramos persevered and persevered but it just wasn't happening for our once ‘Rock' and a parting of ways was a natural course. We needing to bring in a keeper, who oozed confidence, commanded that penalty box and give our defence some much needed assurance behind them.

It is fair to say that when we splashed out £7.8m on Heurelho Gomes, I think I'm right in saying that opinion was mixed. Many saw the Brazilian as somewhat of a clown and a cross between David James and Bruce Grobbelaar, while others saw a top class keeper, who was finally going to bring stability and strength to the backline. I think even those who were sceptical must be having second thoughts, given his performances in the opening games; notably the Chelsea game, where for me he and Woodgate were the best players on the football pitch.

It is fair to say that there is certainly an eccentric side to Gomes, but what is wrong with that. He has a ridiculous amount of confidence and not afraid to take a ball off his defenders head, or clatter into them to gather a cross. It is actually quite refreshing to see a goalkeeper at Spurs who actually comes out of his six yard box at set pieces and as a supporter you no longer fear crosses or set pieces being whipped into the box as you know 9 out of 10 times, Gomes will be onto it. A good goalkeeper is like a 30 goal a season striker; their importance can be as much as 10-15pts extra a season and that is why for me he will prove our most significant arrival this summer.

So what is the verdict on Gomes and have those doubters changed their tune, or do reservations still persist?

Agreed, alongside Modric our
Agreed, alongside Modric our best signing. I will be honest I always have had doubts over Robbo and for me Gomes represents our best goalkeeper since Clemence.

Certainly the best keeper we
Certainly the best keeper we have had in years. He commands the box and his distribution is first class, you can sense the back four being relaxed with him in front.

I have to say i have been impressed with what I have seen. His confidence alone means he is never likely to let goals get him down and we have needed that calming influence for a long time, agree with the above sentiments about Clemence.

When I first heard about
When I first heard about Gomes and looked him up I was totally torn as to whether he would be any good and I shouting for us to sign Ajaxs Stekelenburg. But seeing him play he is so commanding and is actually an impressive player to watch play. He makes the defenders job so much easier and tells them where to go and what to do. And to be honest I think the eccentricity is fanatastic because he is such a character between the sticks. Apparently he has more than replaced RK as the joker of the dressing room!

Gomes played very well @
Gomes played very well @ Chels, but was rubbish @ Boro and even worse against Sunderland. Cisse's goal was down to calamity defending & Gomes must take full responsibility. That said its defo early days and if he can build on his performance against Chels then he indeed cud turn out to be a very important signing. The rest of the new boys have yet to impress so the jury is defo out at the moment. Villa will b a very good test and obviously we are all looking forward to seeing the Pav play. One small proble with him is that he's alreay played more or less a full season and the Euros. The guy will be knackerd by Xmas ! Im a diehard [*@!$] but am expecting absolutely nothing from this season. Wot a shame as the pre season promised so much and i cant believe i feel this way after 3 games. I think the City stuff hasnt helped as we can all see how the game we love is changing rapidly. Its all about the dough and as its been said quite a few times but the real football is not being played in the Premier League, It's just a global panto !

I was very impressed with
I was very impressed with Heurelho Gomes when I first saw him at the lane playing for PSV in the UEFA cup. He won the 2nd leg for PSV with his saves in the game and in the penalty shoot out. I said to my friend after the game at spurs, we need a good goalkeeper like him and that nice Mr. Levy went got him for us, Which was great!! What I have seen in the two matches I have seen him live, he has improved the defence very much, I no longer feel everytime our opponents attack they are going to score, which is how I felt last season. I must say I think Heurelho Gomes is our best signing over the summer followed by Bentley then Modric, of the games played so far. Up the Spurs!!
