Is the writing on the wall at Spurs?

Football FanCast columnist Rob Facey reacts to the news that Damien Comolli job maybe under threat after failing to bring in a striker on deadline day, but asks: are Spurs’ other signings not proof that he is doing a good job?

Damien Comolli’s future at Tottenham is under threat, according to the Telegraph, after the clubs lack of success on transfer deadline day. The club secured the services of Frazier Campbell from United as part of the Berbatov deal, but other than that they remain short up front.

If Darren Bent got injured for a significant chunk of the season then all their hopes will lay with Roman Pavlyuchenko and the inexperienced Fraizer Campbell or simply relying on the numerous attack minded midfielders they have at their disposal. This must have crossed the board’s mind at some stage during the summer though?

Spurs played a key part in many big moves this summer, mainly in selling their striking duo of Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov to Premier League rivals. However, they bought as well as anyone, perhaps even bringing in some of the best players in Luka Modric and Roman Pavlyuchenko, as well as David Bentley from Blackburn, Dos Santos from Barca and Huerelho Gomes in goal. But now, understandably, questions are being asked after the lack of attacking players on the clubs roster.

Comolli has defended his position by stating that “we got a lot of the players we wanted – and early,” as reported in the Telegraph.

“Spurs had to think about building a team with a future and that’s exactly what we’ve done,” he added.

His position surely can not be under threat after all of the signings he oversaw this summer, but should he be the one held accountable for the lack of strikers at White Hart Lane?

The club are hardly likely to terminate his contract now, but there will be added pressure on him in January, especially if the club are struggling for goals. He will be expected to bring in a world class striker, and after reports have emerged that the club made a last ditch attempt to sign Kevin Doyle, fans should perhaps be counting their blessings that they never completed that signing. The thing is, is that world class strikers are in short supply, so Comolli will be expected to work his magic in January competing against top European clubs.

Is the writing on the wall for Comolli? Do Spurs need another striker or will their attacking options see them through? Are fans upset that a big striker wasn’t brought in, despite the other transfers the club completed? Is this just a sign of the modern game where no matter how much progress a club is making in the window, one failure means that you are out of the job?

I think Comolli has been

I think Comolli has been made a scapegoat and the signings have been good, to pin it all on him is wrong and everyone is accountable.

He has done an excellent job

He has done an excellent job in the last two windows when you look at the players that have been brought in. Arnesen use to buy duff ones as well its just that Comolli's get magnified.

I'm so flipping glad that

I'm so flipping glad that there are people with a sense of realism here. On many Spurs blogs, ther are people who are trying to make Comolli a scapegoat for every aspect of the club, not just the transfers! It's unbelievable! We have done well in this window. The lack of strikers was not for the lack of trying, as Arshavin was blocked, Milito went to his "dream" club and Garcia preferred to stay in Spain. Some Spurs fans were just born to be annoying, I guess. Comolli has done well.

In the past he has clearly

In the past he has clearly brought in players that wouldn't make the first team of one of the real top 4. But he was given another crack and has brought in another bunch of players. Now I think its time for us all to shut up and wait for the team to have a good run at things. Then if they screw it all up again there will be enough proof that Comolli needs to leave. But if miracles do happen and the Gods finally do favour Spurs then we can all say how amazing he is. He is essentially a random factor. The only other alternative is to just give up thinking and just accept the fact that no matter how [*@!$] Spurs are we still love them, still watch them, and still expect them to go out and win every game they play.

People love to forget the

People love to forget the good, and remember the bad... DC is the easy target when things don't go our way. I think we should give him the benefit of the doubt, and judge him come January. If we don't get the quality of players (in Jan) then we can start asking some questions... Not now!

Comolli is being made a

Comolli is being made a scapegoat for Levy's cock up. The reason why we missed out on Arshavin was because Levy would not sanction the asking price even when it was lowered. Levy is a disgrace.

We had matched Zenit's

We had matched Zenit's lowered price. We just wanted to pay the money over the length of Arshavins contract with us, which Zenit refused to allow.

If Comolli goes, it be

If Comolli goes, it be because it's his turn to be scapegoat. Spurs can't keep trashing perfectly good managers.

as far as i'm aware (i just

as far as i'm aware (i just remember this from the papers at the time), the signings that were most closely associated with commolli were boateng, kaboul, taarabt and zokora. with the exception of zokora (who is decent but by no means an adequate replacement for carrick at the time), that's a pretty damning indictment. but he's done ok i suppose.

I agree with most of the

I agree with most of the above comments. There has been a complete over reaction on many of the other comment sites to his role, and the club's ambissions. There has obviously been a complete change of direction of the clubs buying policy this close season, where instead of just buying young (and predominantly) English players we have now targetted foreign and quite expensive based ones. There are also inherent problems with this policy - especially as the rest of the world is now aware of the amount of money sloshing around in the prem. I think people should remember we still have 2 full international centre forwards, with Di Santos also able to play there and also a full international, whilst Frazier is an under 21 England Int.
