Spurs would be crazy to entertain move in light of possible constraint

Football FanCast columnist Glenn Baker feels that Spurs will be crazy to entertain a new stadium, especially given the long term constraints it will undoubtedly bring.

If you wanted to split Spurs fans right down the middle then just ask any of them there thoughts about leaving White Hart Lane. Many see the great benefits of it with the obvious increase in revenue, allowing the club to compete financially and subsequently in time would more than pay for itself - that is my concern, how long and at what cost?

I personally was intrigued to hear Arsene Wenger come out this morning and reveal the constraint his football club are facing; given the huge mortgage repayments they face having built the Emirates. The club policy has sided towards the development of youth and hoping that their manager can work minor miracles in the process. It is a dangerous balancing act the Arsenal board is facing and you wonder if it will eventually pay off; future earnings are one thing, trophies in the cabinet are quite the other.

The Emirates, for me, is a glorified version of all the lifeless new stadia that has been creeping up around the country. They all lack the character of the Lane, Anfield, Goodison and dare I say Upton Park. I would hate Tottenham to move down a similar road and that is why a part development at White Hart Lane will always be my preferred option.

I personally cannot see the benefit for us, especially in our current situation, taking on a huge mortgage that will bring future constraints for our managers - are we really in a position to do this; surely the main emphasis of club funds should be behind Juande Ramos? We are building a great momentum at the football club and I would hate to see us jeopardise that for a stadium that could set the football club back years.

I have never understood why the football club don't entertain a move that both Leeds and Manchester United did and build one massive stand that could house around 20,000+ on the West side of the ground. By knocking it down it will reduce the capacity, but we will still be able to get more fans in than we would with a proposed move to Milton Keynes. For me it is the only alternative that will keep us at the Lane and would prove a damn cheaper than any new stadium would.

What is the best move for the club going forward? Do we really need a new stadium in order to compete? Would we be crazy to entertain it given the consequences of such a move, highlighted by Wenger this morning?

I agree would hate to see us

I agree would hate to see us leave the Lane and the cost of a new stadium is just not worth the hassle. Id rather they knock the West down first and then build a new stand every season for the next four years. Maintain our capacity and wont have to frive up to MK every other week.

We dont need a new stadium.

We dont need a new stadium. 50,000 will be the right capacity for us and as your man says you can achieve that by just building one huge stand.

i think that if we did build

i think that if we did build a new stadium it would lose the spirit lacked like the emirates. we would ALSO be lacking in financial help to support the club. we would just turn out to be a new arsena* could easily extend ours to 55,000 seats

i heard 60 000 upgrade in

i heard 60 000 upgrade in the offing. thats more like it!coys

Local transport facillities

Local transport facillities have to be taken into consideration. The area cannot cope with 36,000 fans, how's it supposed to cope with 50-55,000?

i agree. the have problems

i agree. the have problems already with local transport and they cant cope with 36,000 fans, so how are they gona cope with 50,000-60,000 fans? i would build a new stadium. WE HAVE TO WAIT AND SEEEÈEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A new stadium will allow us

A new stadium will allow us to utilise WHL up until the new stadium is ready and will avoid stadium sharing. It will also allow us to have 60,000 capacity which will really make up competative with the Top 4 financially in the future and allow us to pay top wages and attract the top players. If we stay in the same area (move across the road) it will allow the local council to develop the area's roads, parking facilities and public transport (Central Line extension with new station at WHL from Woodford/Gants Hill would make alot of sense???). We would not necesserally lose the WHL atmosphere if the stadium was planned well and learned from the lessons of other new stadiums. I just hope that the board makes a decision soon. COYS

In response to Glenn Baker,

In response to Glenn Baker, Spurs would be crazy NOT to consider building a new stadium, whether on the same site or elsewhere. You are completely wrong about Arsenal's current financial situation. Their combined loan and interest repayments amount to less than £20 million per annum. The added income that they take as a result of the new stadium is not far short of £50 million per annum. You do the maths. Even with the debt, Arsenal are £30 million per annum richer than they were before they built the Emirates. And you really should pay no heed to what Wenger says to the press about what he can spend on transfers. If he prefers to buy younger, cheaper players, then it is only out of vanity. He wants to be able to say that he built an all conquering team on the cheap. That would be his lasting legacy. Back to Spurs - we could expect to see our income increase by £30 million per annum, or more, if we built a 50-60K stadium. That would be more than enough to cover combined loan and interest repayments. Our transfer budget would be unaffected. The problem won't be our ability to service any debt. The problem will be our ability to secure the debt finance in the first place. In the current market, it will be extremely difficult to persuade the banks to lend us the money.

How the hell did the area

How the hell did the area cope when we regularly had 45 to 50,000.

In response to lex, the idea

In response to lex, the idea of increasing capacity to 50K by just building one "huge stand" utterly appals me. I do not want a carbon copy of Elland Road, thanks very much. I hate stadia where one stand is totally out of proportion to the remaining three stands.
