Football FanCast columnist Hans Schmitz has decided to go on a scouting mission to find the players that he feels would be a welcome addition to White Hart Lane - his next stop takes him to his native Holland.

If there was one statistic that amazed me when the season came to an end, was that Spurs had dropped some 30+pts, when in a leading position in matches. It made for woeful reading and a real indictment of how our season panned out; as kamikaze defending coupled with poor goalkeeping made the club look as vulnerable as I have seen them since the days of Ossie and Christian Gross.

There are many theories as to why we have been so bad, from incompetent defenders, lack of midfield protection and of course the keeper situation. I personally believe that it is a combination of the three but a large majority of the blame, has to rest squarely at the feet of Paul Robinson.

It has been a dramatic fall from grace for the once darling of the Park Lane and his performances at times can be described as poor at best. Confidence shot to pieces and I'm sure I wasn't the only Spurs fan who simply couldn't look whenever there was a free kick outside the box. Spurs have pretty much pulled the plug on his time at the Lane, as Ramos begins his revolution at the club and I hope if Robinson moves on in the summer, that he can recapture his form.

Every given day we are being linked with goalkeepers from far and around and the two most prominent targets has been Gregory Coupet and Heurelho Gomes. Both come with excellent CV's but my certain preference will have to be the big Brazilian. He impressed me greatly in the two UEFA cup games this season; no more so than that last minute save from Steed Malbranque.

ENJOY

It has been reported in the Independent that Spurs made a bid for the PSV stopper but was turned down as it fell short of the £11.6m price tag; they have put on his head.

As you can see from the footage, Gomes is an absolute class act and has a huge amount of presence in the penalty area. It is something that we really haven't seen since the days of Erik the Viking and it would certainly be welcomed. Spurs really shouldn't haggle over the price because a good goalkeeper adds about 10-15pts to your season and Gomes is certainly one of the best.

So should Spurs bring Gomes to the club? Would you prefer to see Gregory Coupet? Is it inconceivable that Spurs will buy both?

At the end of the day a
At the end of the day a goalkeeper is just as important as a centre forward and Spurs should spend top dollar to bring him to the club. He looks class.

Personally I like the idea
Personally I like the idea of Coupet bringing his experience to lead from the back. But I'm not going to get carried away as Keepers and Strikers are linked to our club daily just to fill chip wrapper space! I feel sorry for Robinson despite my own fear everytime he's been inbetween the posts this season. With a continually changing back four and a midfield which vertually encouraged teams to walk right through it was luck duck season out there for him. Yes he could have done better but we also have to remember he didn't have the best set-up for coaching. This has now thankfully changed and may yet prove to be one of our most significant signings this summer. Goal keepers probably suffer more than most went it comes to fluctuations in form. This is made harder as they have nowhere to hide like outfield players - Jenas take note! - as the shots will keep coming. Personally I'd like to see him stay as he's been incredibly loyal to Spurs and signed one of the longest contracts in our history when other clubs came sniffing. You can't buy that in the transfer market! Having the experience of Coupet and the new coaching set-up might bring his confidence back and have him fighting for his place. Who'd have thought David James would have a season like this? Knowing we need two keepers and would get little money now it may be best to stick with him and save the money for other areas of the team to shield the goal. COYS!

"he didn't have the best
"he didn't have the best set-up for coaching", he was a an England international, theres no excuses for not being able to catch the ball. The dont coach that, its judgement and skill, thats what they get paid for. Sorry but he wasnt good enough for the championship not alone the premier league. I think he made the defence shakey as well, when he never came for crosses or flapped at them. He also demotivated our strikers who would score a great goal only for robo to let in a howler 10 mins later.

Spurs should get the keeper
Spurs should get the keeper from Livorno Marco Amelia. If Buffon wasn't so fucking class he would be keeping for Italy and my mate says he has single handedly kept Livorno up. Also Real Madrid and Chelski were sniffing around a year ago. Get a bid in sharpish and stick him between the uprights sorted.

Boris I think you've missed
Boris I think you've missed the whole point of my comments. Even good goal keepers need a goal keeping coach - plain and simple. If you're suggesting he didn't need one because he's an international then you probably think we don't need Ramos considering the international players in the outfield? Of course you don't but let's be a little realistic. I've simply tried to look beyond his howlers and lack of form and focus on what all goal keepers go through during their career. More importantly I feel Robinson deserves to stay at the club to fight for his position because of the loyalty he's shown to Spurs and the fans alike. I believe if we show a little faith a give him time to fight he'll pay us back in spades!

No More Fat Keepers, I
No More Fat Keepers, I completly agree with Marco Amelia. Disappointed that we don't seem to be linked to him anymore, especially as it was said it was almost a done deal in January. Hopefully as with Modric this is good news though!

He looks good as a goal
He looks good as a goal stopper but not much was shown on him taking on crosses. English games are well known on their crosses from the flanks. Crosses are one of the hardest to handle especially when you have so many players packing inside the box.

Gomez is a poor keeper, if
Gomez is a poor keeper, if there is one thing I could see from Spurs' games against PSV is that, although a great shot stopper, Gomez couldn't catch for toffee. In fact I was rather dissapointed with Spurs not trying to capitalise on his major weakness, several times Gomez came to punch and several times his clearances didn't even make it out of the box. Now correct me if I'm wrong but don't we already have a keeper who, at his best, is a fantastic shot stopper but can't deal with ariel balls? Gomez is the Brazilian David James, a few class saves followed by a moment of pure idiocy.
