On last
week's Tottenham FanCast, Harry Hockley and I announced the nominations for our
end of season awards. Category's from player of the season, value for money and
the "Damien Comolli" award for the worst signing of the year.
Over the
next few weeks we will delve into each of the topics for your reading and
listening pleasure, starting this week to find out the first recipient of the "Damien
Comolli" award
So who is
our worst signing of the season? Here are our nominations, feel free to add your
own in the comments page we might include them...
Younes
Kaboul
The
Frenchman has 29 appearances under the belt but has he done enough to convince
Spurs fans and Ramos that he has something to offer the club? His comments
earlier this week won't have improved his relationship with our Spanish leader
but what next for our French bucket of potential?
Kaboul came to WHL with a big reputation and price tag to match, I wanted him
to be our long term replacement for King but having watched him on many
occasions, he seems devoid of any of the qualities needed to be a top flight
centre half. He seems to lose concentration far too easily, his position is
poor and although he looks confident on the ball he can't pass the thing to
anyone other than the opposing team.
I hope he
proves me wrong and the coaching staff get the best out of him, he finds the
father figure he needs and becomes a rock at the centre of our defence but I
think that is as likely as Robbo stopping a shot from 30 yards!
Kevin-Prince
Boateng
Many will say this is a little harsh but I'm just not sure that this guy has what it takes to wear the white shirt. At 21 years of age he has established himself as a player good enough to represent the German under 21s but we haven't seen much of this for Spurs. When Ramos arrived he placed him straight into the starting line up but the Spaniard, who reportedly tried to sign him when he was at Seville, seems to have dropped him from his plans. The arrival of Modric would suggest that not only should Boateng be worried but many of our other under-performing midfielders will be having sleepless nights.
Also, can
anyone tell me what hell he is doing and what was that hair do was about
earlier on in the season? I know he is the Ghetto kid but it going a bit far.
If he learns to pass, shoot and look interested we could have a talent on our
hands, maybe Comolli sees something that I don't?
Darren
Bent,
Our much talked about £16m signing hasn't really lived up to many Spurs fans expectations. Eyebrows were certainly raised when Levy smashed the club record to bring in the striker from Charlton, even though we already had the likes of Keane, Berbatov and Defoe at the club. He has failed to settle at the football club and certainly has struggled to reproduce his form he had at the south London club.
Is he really that bad? He hasn't made the impact that many would expect but I've heard some Spurs fans claiming he's turned a corner and that his return isn't so bad when you look at it?
Well let's
do the maths....
Bent
35 appearances (20 as sub) he has returned
8 goals - a ratio of 0.23 goals per game,
Keane
53 appearances
(8 as sub) he has returned 23 goals - a ratio of 0.42 goals per game,
Berbatov
51 appearances
(4 as sub) he has returned 23 goals - a ratio of 0.45 goals per game
Even the
departed Jermain Defoe's ratio for us and Portsmouth this season notches up a
ratio of 0.39 so does it mean we got rid of the wrong striker? That's a topic
for another day. Can Bent turn the corner, win over the Spurs fans and grab a
place in Capello's squad? Is Juande Ramos going to give him more time at WHL to
prove his worth?
Will
Darren Bent, the Fresh Prince or Kaboul win the much coveted "Damien Comolli" award
