Wolverhampton PodJockey Adam Thompson reflects on a disappointing season in the Championship for Mick McCarthy and feels the fans deserve some respect and understanding.

How do you top off a disappointing season with rare highs and even rarer quality on show? Have a pop at the fans; put a favourite of theirs up for sale and mouth off in the press you'll win the league next season (Like you did the previous). These are the realities of the McCarthy and Moxey regime at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It has been a season full of hypocrisy and it is this that has riled Wolves fans and in particular myself. We were promised by Mick McCarthy a challenge for ‘the top two places and nothing less' and yet we failed to get even a playoff place as well as being told half way through the season that we (the fans) were putting ‘too much pressure' on the players, which reflected in our poor home form. To top this off McCarthy then states he won't look at the league until March when it starts getting important, with Wolves at this point languishing in the mid table of the division and disregarding fans concerns for our ill fated play off challenge.

The transfer dealings have been one disaster after another. Jody Craddock is deemed not good enough and is shipped out to Stoke on loan and he is subsequently replaced by new signing Darren Ward, who fails to step up to the mark so Merlin decides to bring Craddock back. A few months on and Ward is put up for sale, whilst Jody is offered a new deal. Kevin Kyle signed on loan from Coventry to ‘make an impact from the bench' starts ahead of international striker Freddy Eastwood. He starts several games which was effectively two fingers up to the Wolves fans by ‘our' manager. On request of the Wolves staff to ease off the pressure on the players ‘Super Mick' turned ‘Coco the clown' and puts Kyle (well known as a confidence player) in a must win game against Southampton. At this point I would like to make out that this is not an attack on Kevin Kyle, in fact it was poor management and was put under pressure by the his manager. But these are just a few and not even a mention of the money that was spent on players such as Darren Ward and the additions of Stephen Elliot and Freddy Eastwood, who all find themselves on the transfer list this summer.

If I am honest, it is this transfer list that has left most Wolves fans scratching their heads. Darren Potter (The best passer of a ball at the club) - Rob Edwards (The best centre back next to Jody Craddock), and Freddy Eastwood (one of three players with natural quality in the squad). Taking Edwards out the equation due to his injuries this season there have been games that have screamed out for Potter and Eastwood to get into. Wolves v Albion needed a calm head with creativity in the centre of midfield. When Potter was available, McCarthy selected the Manchester United loanee Darren Gibson ahead of him (and from his performance not even Darren Fletcher will be quaking in his boots). Blackpool v Wolves; We were screaming for a link between midfield and attack, Keogh was having a disaster out of position  on the right and Kevin Kyle was having to find an extra 10 yards of pace from the searching balls played by the hot and cold Karl Henry. The chants of ‘Freddy' rang out from the away contingent, he was introduced alright.... With 50 seconds remaining.

That Blackpool game was the first time I sincerely doubted the abilities of Mick McCarthy and I felt it was a pivotal moment in our season. Blackpool which had meant nothing to Wolves fans, for years, other than a cheap weekend away was now dubbed a ‘good draw'. I ask of those reading would Rafa Benitez (who did for a period chase for the Premiership title) consider a draw against lets say Bolton away a good draw? Of course not, its 2 points dropped and I bet he would even come out and admit that. McCarthy however has shown to the fans (to politely put it) he is a proud man. Unfortunately there have been too many times this season his heart has ruled his head and clouded reason.

I have felt since the "I won't look at the table until the end of March" comment McCarthy has tried to achieve two things. A playoff place but also that tactical decision which would turn the fans from seeing Mick as ‘Coco' back to ‘Super' and he had it at his finger tips on so many occasions, by calling on #23 Eastwood to fire us into the Premiership he had a player, who in the little bits we saw of him, had enough class to influence dedicated Wolves fans week in week out to call his name. There have been times the ‘Freddy' chants have been premature (QPR at home when Keogh went on to score two) but we are not stupid. We will not chant any old blokes name for a season, if we see quality and effort we will support that as it was the same reason we chanted Henri Camara in that relegation threatened season because he had quality (but no loyalty).

To add fuel to the flames of this season Wolves handling of the press in the last few weeks has been amateur. The attempts to cover all angles by releasing details of a 40,000 seater Molineux and the promise of heavy investment in the week leading up to our crunch game with Plymouth was transparent and its purpose was obvious ‘even if we lose, we look positive'.

Jez Moxey labels the signing of Freddy Eastwood as ‘disappointing.' But how can you judge a player on 15 minutes spells in a 90 minute game? Then we are blasted by our manager as ‘Sad'. Now I will admit there is a select few of Wolves fans who even if they beat Chelsea 8-0 would suggest ‘it's about time' but that is just people in general. What angers me about this ‘Sad' comment is that its suggests that as a fan we haven't a right to voice our opinion that we should just shut up and have trust in our manager. But the question I put forward to Mr McCarthy is how do you trust a manager who at times seems to be doing what's right for his pride rather than the football club? I just find it hard to swallow especially as when Wolves failed to make the play-offs, there was certainly no fuss made and it was generally accepted among supporters that ‘we weren't good enough and Albion deserved to be champions'. I mean out of the 12 League games against the teams above us we only won once; that in itself would have been reason to grumble and yet we haven't.

I don't know about other Wolves fans but I am becoming increasingly frustrated by the almost daily comments in the Express and Star by our players coming out and promising us promotion next year.

"We'll win the league", "We'll get top two", "We'll do it for the real fans".... Shut your mouths and get on with the football. If anything this highlights the inexperience and youth of our squad, to continually come out in the press with wild predictions for a Championship season that will be immensely tougher than the last. This only makes you appreciate Dave Jones' rein at Wolves where the players came out at the right time and said the right thing. The lead up to the playoff final, no press conferences were held to let the players play the game and not the occasion. Result? 3-0 Wolves.

For me that is the difference, Wolves fans can't see a resemblance to our promotion side of 2003. We tasted success and we don't want to wait that long again. That is the long and short of it. So while Moxey and McCarthy ask for patience, a favour I'm sure all Wolves fans would appreciate is some simple understanding.

We've heard all the promises before, we've seen these tactical ineptness before and seen our favourites sold with futile reasons given to the fans. Saying we are going to win the league is not good enough, failing to admit YOU put too much pressure on the players (not just the fans) is not good enough and finally having a go at the fans for a lack of positive attitude, to a sub-par season, is not good enough because we will be here long after you kick the bucket or enjoy your big pay packet at your country club.

I ever our football club
I ever our football club wants to move to any great height then we need to bring in a manager who is tried and tested and done it ona regular basis, something McCarthy hasn't.

McCarthy couldnt get himself
McCarthy couldnt get himself out of paper bag let alone get us in the Premier League. We don't deserve the stick we have been getting.

So you just heppened to miss
So you just heppened to miss the signings of Foley, Elokobi, D. Edwards, and most importantly Sylvan Ebanks-Blake. Stephen Elliot doesn't find himself on the transfer list, he's apparently asked for a transfer, as has Potter. On Freddy being dissapointing, you judge him based on performances on the pitch, MM will judge him by various other points, such as how he does in training, his attittude, and how he interacts with the other players. You say you like players with quality and effort, well where was the effort with Eastwood? Shooting every time you get the ball isn't effort. Also, almost every manager says that they don't look at the table. You miss key points such as Kightly being out from Novemeber onwards, take any teams best player out for more than half a season and they will struggle, ask yourself, how would ManU have done if Ronaldo didn't play since November? Add to that Jarvis being out for the first half of the season, for only the last few matches did we have our main wingers running at defenses. Plus, Murray has been injured all season, and as good as Hennessey is at his age, MM is better. A very poor, and very biased article.

Why have most of Micks
Why have most of Micks signing heading out the door less than 12 months later.SEB is the player we needed in the summer, the point of the article is that the stuborness of the club to act like everything is rosey and everything is going to be fine in the end is insulting to the fans. At least Mick McCarthy has came out in the paper today and revealed he has let the fans down in terms of promotion. But my aim in this article was not cause an 'anti McCarthy' regime, in fact it is to see another side beyond the '40'000 molineux' and 'young and hungry players' which Mick and Moxey have repeated so much last season it has become cliché. But what i have stated above is fact and i will argue to the death that the treatment on Eastwood has been disgusting and he was the quality we needed. And i argue the use of Kevin Kyle to the use of Freddy Eastwood in crucial games underlined McCarthys stubborness. We have been unfortunate with injuries but dont you think this should be taken into account when making outragous predictions over winning the league. It only highlights the a lack of maturity in the side and the one player who came out and told it how it was the experienced Gary Breen.

3 aren't most IMO, if Elliot
3 aren't most IMO, if Elliot has asked for a transfer and wants to leave, then there isn't much you can do, Ward has been a mistake, and something went wrong between MM and FE. I can't say whether the treatment to Eastwood has been fair or not, as I don't know the full story behind things. The way I see it though, is we are one of the most financially stable clubs in the country, have a backer who is putting money into the club, has a long-term plan, and not just a short term fix to appease fans, we have players who are worth more than they were bought for, and we have players wanted by Prem clubs. MM did make one big mistake, and that was saying we can challenge for the top 2, he gave the fans, exactly what had been taken away, expectation, the players we have are young, and surely wont handle the expectation of the crowd as well as senior pros would.

Anon (strange name), the
Anon (strange name), the bottom line is this: if Steve Morgan is serious about getting us into the Premiership and staying there, then he needs a manager who is a winner, has flexible tactics and coaching methods, a good backroom staff, a good scouting source, and a large transfer kitty. Alas, McCarthy is 'old school' and wants to surround himself with players who say "yes Mick, no Mick, 3 bags full Mick". The Eastwood saga highlights his inability to handle a player who may have a bit of an attitude or something. He watched him (did he?), signed him for £1.5m, then said "he's not for me". A good manager would have handled Eastwood differently, but not Mick. Woe betide if you criticise him or question his athority! In my opiniion McCarthy does not possess what is required if Morgan's ambitions are more than empty promises. When he gets the boot I'll be sad, not because he's gone, but because he was given a wonderful opportunity yet his stubborn ego as much as anything, blew it. I'm tired of seeing Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. being a nice cushy pension fund for people who don't deliver (unlike Ince or Rae). A final thought: if you haven't got a good first touch by the time you're 21 or 22, you never will have - this young exciting crap being spun by Moxey is just that.

What a load of one sided
What a load of one sided crap this article is. Freddy Eastwood- our "saviour" who has done naff all for us except play 19hours of football in which he has come on, run with the ball a bit and hit speculative wide of the mark efforts. We talk about stubbornness... McCarthy transfer listing him, meaning by default that buying Freddy was a mistake, is the opposite of stubborn Im afraid. If he kept Eastwood on the books because he was his signing, then THAT would be stubborn. With SEB, there is no way FE can be guaranteed first team football. SEB was brought in to do the job which MM realised FE couldnt do. A bloody good move in my opinion and one that also nearly saved our season. Expect big things from SEB next season, things you would never have gotten from Eastwood anyway. By the way, can anybody explain why Eastwood gets chanted and Elliott gets booed? Theyve both done [*@!$] all as far as I can see. Only difference being is that Elliott actually looks interested when he plays. You try managing a football club where your two best players, Murray and Kightly, suffer long term injuries, and then YOU try winning automatic promotion. Why cant we jump on the wolves bandwagon and pull in the same direction for another season and see how we fare with a full selection of players? If you dislike the direction of the club and its manager then I suggest you go away while the rest of us enjoy the continued revival of a Wolves team who had 6 players when MM took over, because youre going to be stuck with it for a long time im afraid. Sorry but we are still in a place of consolidation as far as I can see. Last season did us no favours, finishing anywhere near west brom with the team we had was a miracle, but people dont recognise this (well the idiots dont anyway). We were all willing to go with the young and hungry thing when things were going well, but we miss out on the play offs in the second year of a long term building process and all of a sudden the manager is [*@!$]? Get a life.

Oh yeah the use of Kevin
Oh yeah the use of Kevin Kyle, a free loan signing, over the 1.5m striker McCarthy brought in himself smacks of stubbornness completely. I suppose that when he admitted he was wrong to send Craddock away that was stubborn too. Or when he said the fans had every right to boo at the Cardiff away game, was that arrogant or stubborn or full of excuse? When did you decide that Freddy Eastwood was our saviour? Was it when he was left in the middle of nowhere in a cant be arsed position (despite having fresh legs) while Karl Henry slid in with a miracle winner at Charlton? Or was it his arrogant penalty that cost us at Ipswich? Or was it the fact that after a year at the club he is still unfit? Or is it the fact that he moans every time somebody doesnt pass to him? If impatient, speculative shooting at crucial moments everytime you get the ball from ridiculous positions is your thing, then you keep your Freddy Eastwood, while the rest of us who have eyes focus on those who have actually done something positive for us, ie Ebanks Blake and Keogh.

I think alot of you guys are
I think alot of you guys are putting too much emphasis on the Eastwood angle. But are you telling me when we needed class in a game and someone with technical ability (particularly) the albion game that eastwood was not an option, he was playing well for wales which showed he still was sharp. But my main annoyance is that 1.Wolves should not blame fans for being dissapointed when they were claiming they were automatic promotion fodder and we finished 7th. 2.Dont insult our intelligence by using the press to put a positive spin on a poor season and 3 Why is it that wolves fans chanted for Eastwood ALL season simple, because we could see ability that was never given a fair chance. I think Wolves have done enough by claiming were going to win the league next season, and that investment will be coming and i for one is excited about this however im not going to forget a season where McCarthy spent more time dualing with the fans just to prove a point. And a point i didnt make which maybe i should have was that what if we do get promoted and the reign of Super Mick is back, how is he going to handle big name stars we will need? Because some how i can't see the likes of a Paul Ince or Alex Rae ever being introduced into our squad if Mick McCarthy lets his heart rule his head. Maybe he feels he dealt with Eastwood in the best way he could and maybe the lack of player support of him leaving supports this however there is no way no-one is going convince me Kevin Kyle shouldnt have been picked over Eastwood
