The best thing about football is that is brings people together. For ten months you are locked together in one big family; all sharing the same dreams and hopes that your football club is going to succeed and whether your Southampton or Sutton Utd; those same emotions are replicated throughout.

My fellow colleague Sam Hollis recently wrote an article about Luton Town and how they face the prospect of starting the season on -25pts. This was all due to apparent dodgy dealings from the previous regime and it's clear the knives are out and you do wonder if the Bedfordshire club are being made an example of. It got me thinking about the lower leagues in general and the harsh treatment that some of the clubs receive within - it all probably seems a far cry from those who follow the Premier League and I wonder if any of their fans actually have any sympathy for clubs in the lower divisions.

With prized assets like Michael Kightly and young goalkeeping sensation Wayne Hennessey, both heavily linked with Premier League clubs - you kind of sense, if a suitable offer was to come in, that neither will be starting the season at Molineux.

It's playoff time once again and, I must say, the matches I've seen I have greatly enjoyed. But it's about this time every year when the pundits, mainly on the radio, question whether the playoff system is fair. After all, a team could, feasibly, finish third and miss out on an automatic place on goal difference, but lose to a team fifteen or so points behind them in sixth and so miss out on promotion altogether.

Football - why do we love it when it can be so cruel? The torture and pain of reality rarely lives up to the hope and excitement of expectations. I really believed that Crystal Palace had a great chance of winning promotion through the playoffs this season, regardless of media talk of us being favourites and having the best form, so the demise of my dream was painful. It is hard even to write about it, but like therapy, it will only help with the recovery.
