The new Director of Football at Newcastle United, Joe Kinnear, has already ruffled a few feathers in what is going down as one of the most bizarre appointments in Premier League history.

In his first interview since taking the job, he told talkSPORT presenter Andy Goldstein that he would have a big hand in any transfer dealings the club made, but many Magpies fans will be hoping before he gets involved in signing players, that he will memorise the names of those already in the squad.

During the live chat, Kinnear got a number of players’ names wrong, including calling cult striker Shola Ameobe, Shola Amenobee, Papiss Cisse, Papiss Cee-Cee and French midfielder Yohan Cabaye, Yohan Kebab.

With that in mind, we’ve compiled a Joe Kinnear Dream XI that’s influenced by his own unique way of referring to his players.

In light of Joe Kinnear recently becoming Director of Football at Newcastle United, it got me thinking of all of his ridiculous quotes over the years. This list in no particular order contains my favourite Kinnear quotes.

1. To all his critics who think he cannot do a good job at Newcastle…

“I heard a silly comment of ‘what can I attract?’ I can open the door to any manager in the world, anyone, that’s the difference,” he said. “I’ve spent my whole life talking to [Sir] Alex Ferguson, week in, week out. I can pick the phone up at any time of the day and speak to Arsène Wenger, any manager in the league. In all the divisions.”

2. Asking who Niall Hickman, a writer from The Daily Express, is in a 2008 interview…

“Which one is Hickman? You are out of order. Absolutely ****ing out of order. If you do it again, I am telling you you can **** off and go to another ground. I will not come and stand for that ****ing crap. No fucking way, lies. ****, you’re saying I turned up and they fucked off.”

3. In response to Niall Hickman’s comment that no one wants to get beaten…

“I have done it before. It is going to my ****ing lawyers. So are about three others. If they can find something in it that is a court case it is going to court. I am not ****ing about. I don’t talk to ****ing anybody. It is raking up stories. You are ****ing so ****ing slimy you are raking up players that I got rid of. Players that I had fallen out with. You are not asking Robbie Earle, because he is sensible. You are not asking Warren Barton? No. Because he is ****ing sensible. Anyone who had played for me for 10 years at any level … [but] you will find some **** that.”

4. In response to a journalists saying he is going to write that Kinnear called them cunts in a 2008 press conference…

“Do it. Fine. ****ing print it. Am I going to worry about it? Put in also that it’ll be the last time I see you. Put that in as well. Good. Do it.”

5. Message to Newcastle fans over the weekend…

I’m not accepting it, simple as that. I’ve certainly got more intelligence than them, that’s for sure.”

6. About criticism from the press…

“They are already jumping on the bandwagon saying, ‘Oh watch out Pards [manager Alan Pardew]”, but that’s the snidey press. That’s the people up there who I have upset and they have a grudge so I expect it, but it’s water off a duck’s a**e.”

7. On fans being sucked in…

“Yeah but it’s only a certain section – it was exactly the same when I got there. I got over 10,000 letters when I had my heart attack and that was a wonderful thing and I felt very proud of that. I thought I’d done an excellent job there and no way would we have gone down. But the trouble is that there are a lot of Geordies up there who are influenced and upset – and the fact is that because I stood up to about 100 journalists that night – you know – it was the night we beat Tottenham 2-1 and I suppose the journalists always had it in it. And I am not saying all of the Geordie fans but many of them were sucked into it. If they looked at my job, what I done, carefully they would have said I done a good job.”

8. On not having an ego…

“I’m having lunch with Alan Pardew to discuss our game plan for the new season. We both have the final say on players coming into the club. And we’ve got Graeme Carr as well. We’ll discuss the strengths and weaknesses between us. No-one’s got an ego. I don’t have an ego.”

9. On not having an ego again…

“Managers these days are lucky to last two seasons. The fans always stamp their feet and if they’re not happy with what’s going on the manager gets the bullet. Unfortunately for them, I’ve never been sacked in my life. Look at my record.”

10. On not having an ego for a third time…

“They keep saying to me ‘what did I do?’ Where have these people been? Have they been on another planet? I’ve played in five cup finals and won the lot. I’ve had over 400 games for Tottenham Hotspur. I’ve been manager of the year three times. I’ve travelled the world as a manager.”

Hull manager Steve Bruce is keen to hijack Newcastle’s move for out-of-favour Aston Villa striker Darren Bent, according to reports from The Mirror.

After watching his side score the fewest goals of any side in the top half of the Championship last term, the Tigers chief has made a prolific striker one of his top transfer priorities.

And despite spending the majority of 2012/13 on the bench, Bent is regarded as one of the best penalty box predators in England.

Bruce is keen to take advantage of his lack of a future at Villa Park, and rival Newcastle’s reported interest in his signature.

The Midlanders are demanding a £6million fee as they look to get the 29-year-old off of their wage budget, which had alerted Newcastle.

However, manager Alan Pardew is reluctant to match such a figure, leaving the door open for Bruce.

The ex-Wigan boss would not be against meeting Villa’s demands, and an unnamed source said that he is keen to wrap up a deal.

“Hull certainly wouldn’t baulk at meeting Villa’s asking price for Darren. When Steve Bruce was appointed Sunderland manager four years ago, he made Bent his first signing and he rates him very highly.

“Steve was bitterly disappointed when Darren decided to leave Wearside for Villa because he really felt the club and player were perfect for each other and could go places together.

“Hull know they need to boost their fire-power going into the top flight, and Brucey would love to bring Darren to Humberside.”

However, Bent’s wage demands could be a problem, with Hull likely to request that he takes a cut on his £70,000-per-week earnings.

Hull fans, could Darren Bent fire you to safety?

Spurs chief Andre Villas-Boas is said to have made attacking reinforcements a priority this summer, after relying heavily on goals from star midfielder Gareth Bale last season due to Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor’s struggles.

The Portuguese coach has highlighted Aubameyang, after being impressed by his Ligue 1 displays, and has already approached his employers with a tentative enquiry.

Saint Etienne narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification last season, but their Gabon international striker was in razor-sharp form, netting 21 goals across the campaign.

These performances alerted Newcastle – who are well known for their policy of recruiting some of the French top division’s finest players of late – as well as a number of other major European sides, including big-spending Monaco.

Aubameyang is valued at around £10million, and AVB is said to be willing to meet such demands in order to bulk out his attacking options.

The former Chelsea boss is also attracted to the 23-year-old’s versatility, as he is able to play on either flank, as well as through the centre.

The likes of Leandro Damiao, David Villa and Oscar Cardozo are also on Spurs’ wish list.

Could Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang provide the firepower to push Tottenham back into the Champions League?

Newcastle United have denied rumours that midfielder Yohan Cabaye is set for a move to Monaco this summer, as reported by the Daily Telegraph.

Betting was suspended on the Frenchman moving back to his homeland as big spending Monaco prepare a big bid for the 27 year old.

Reports suggested yesterday that Cabaye was in the south of France undergoing a medical with the club but Newcastle have quickly dismissed that.

Monaco are still preparing a big for the Frenchman however and Newcastle may be powerless to deny Cabaye his dream move for a fee of around £23million.

Monaco have already signed a number of big name players from around Europe after promotion back to Ligue 1 with Colombia’s Radamel Falcao the biggest signing so far.

Manchester United manager David Moyes is also an admirer of the midfielder and so could rival any bid made by Monaco or anyone else this summer.

Over the past week, the short-term loans industry has received its fair share of negative press. Protests against Wonga becoming Newcastle United‘s new kit sponsor have been rife for some time, but the controversial business deal has once again become the focus of attention on Tyneside as star striker Papiss Cisse has refused to wear a Magpies’ shirt donning the loan company’s name on religious grounds, being a practising Muslim, while Bolton have scrapped their planned partnership with money-lenders QuickQuid following a strong adverse reaction from supporters.

Views on bankers and banking practises in England had been damaged enough by the credit crunch and subsequent recession, but there appears to be a far more sinister widely held opinion regarding short-term lenders such as Wonga. Their critics have referred to them as a ‘legal loan shark company’, while an advertised APR of 4,214% is clearly extortionate.

Furthermore however, the short-loans trade has developed a reputation for preying on those who need financial support most, making up to £1,000 available to clients in under 10 minutes in Wonga’s case, only to land customers with hefty penalty fines for missed payments on top of outrageous interest rates, and even going on to cease assets or repossess property for those who can’t afford to pay back what they’ve borrowed. In one word, the business models of Wonga and QuickQuid can be described as ‘immoral’.

It begs the question as to whether our football clubs, either plying their trade within the Premier League or the tiers of the Football League, should be allowed to be making business deals with such companies. Should clubs such as Newcastle be bearing greater moral responsibility, rather than endorsing corporations that prey upon the monetary weaknesses of those feeling the pinch during Britain’s economic depression?

Perhaps the link between club and community has been overall stretched by the commands of the modern game – although community projects are still common, and better funded following English football’s commercial revolution, the sense of connection between clubs, the players, the supporters and the surrounding area has diminished.

Yet on Tyneside, the synergy of club and community is much stronger than in London or Manchester. St. James’ Park is always at full capacity, regardless of the Magpies’ form or the ability of their opponents, and the feeling is that Wonga are trying to hijack the unique bond for their own gain, by using Newcastle as a vehicle to normalise the use of short-term loans in the community.

The localised advertising power a sponsorship deal provides is truly worrying. Whereas TV commercials are a more powerful, widespread tool, should all of the 880,000 population of the Tyneside conurbation be Magpies supporters, that’s nearly a million people the club itself are directing endorsing a morally corrupt product to, not to mention the further millions watching match-day coverage or highlights of any particular fixture. Furthermore, it has the potential for 880,000 to walk around Tyneside as advertising sandwich boards with the word Wonga written across them.

It is particularly concerning considering Newcastle’s economic situation, which adds a whole new layer of moral corruption to the controversial deal with Wonga. The North East has the highest rate of personal insolvency in England, at 35.2%, while the city of Newcastle, in addition to being traditionally working class, currently has a third of its child population living in poverty, 12% higher than the national average.

Similarly, Newcastle City Council leader Nick Forbes believes that the deal will also reflect badly on the city itself, claiming last October: “I am appalled NUFC are in talks with a legal loan shark company. This is another example of the club’s profit at any price culture, which is destroying the image of the club and the city.”

A disregard for fans’ interests has been a symptom of Mike Ashley’s tenure as Newcastle owner. The Sports Direct founder has been criticised for his controversial appointments and sackings, hiring Dennis Wise as Sporting Director, who went on to challenge Kevin Keegan’s authority during his second spell with the Magpies, and firing Chris Hughton in favour of Alan Pardew. On the business front, Ashley received waves of protests from fans after re-naming St. James’ Park as ‘The Sports-Direct Arena’ for commercial purposes, and the new Wonga deal is just the latest episode in the Newcastle chief’s turbulent relationship with the fans, often putting business first.

But there is no doubt that as a football club, Newcastle are benefiting from the sponsorship revenues provided by the partnership with Wonga. The contract is worth £8million per season, and will equate to £24million in profit by the time of its expiration. According to an article by BBC News, £1.5million will go directly into the club’s academy, while further funds will be put into community schemes directed by the club to find jobs for younger people in the surrounding area. They will also rename Newcastle’s stadium St. James’ Park, in a bid to sugar-coat the deal for the supporters.

Furthermore, Wonga are hardly new to the world of football sponsorship deals. Blackpool and Hearts are already sponsored by the short-term lenders, and they are certainly not the only company to partake in a practice which can be accused of lacking a moral compass. Alcoholic endorsement has a long heritage in England, while many Premier League clubs including Aston Villa and Swansea are sponsored by Casino companies, and Newcastle’s former sponsors, Northern Rock, handed out 125% mortgages in addition to being the linchpin that triggered Britain’s economic crisis.

The actions of Northern Rock are hardly comparable to those of Wonga however, with the latter providing interest rates of 4214% per annum, and the 7% of their customers who fail to repay their loans having their credit rating tarnished.

The question remains however; what can supporters actually do to stop these deals taking place? A petition with 5000 signatures was enough to convince Bolton chairman Phil Gartside to change his mind, but overall, the decision came at the owner’s digression, which is exactly why Mike Ashley has been so unfazed despite stern protests from local politicians, the supporters and even his star players.

The sad truth is, the days of clubs being a focal point of the community have been and gone. Despite the fact that football as a sport could not exist and would not receive such widespread affection without firstly the supporters and secondly the intense community bonds and rivalries which makes the experience of victory and defeat so emotionally overwhelming and seemingly crucial to our lives, it remains one of the most inelastic products on the planet.

Whether or not the Magpies are sponsored by Wonga, Charles Manson or Enron, the chances of supporters turning their backs on their club in the form of a boycott remain incredibly slim. Unfortunately for the spectators of the English game, they can only continue to stand idly by as our clubs slip further away from the interests of the fan base and closer towards the realms of business and commerce.

Rather than this instance being the tip of the iceberg, it will undoubtedly ratify and justify further deals of equally questionable conscience to other owners in the future.

Should Newcastle be conducting business with Wonga?

Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor has revealed he is ‘living the dream’ at Newcastle all but ruling out a summer switch elsewhere.

The Toon endured a difficult season, being dragged into a relegation scrap with the Europa League hangover clear to see.

The size and quality of the squad was increased in January and Newcastle pulled away from the relegation zone with a few games to spare.

Taylor was one of a few longer serving players that had to lead the team through the tough months and with three years left on his deal; the Geordie boy is still loving life at his home town club.

Taylor’s defensive partner Fabricio Coloccini’s future is still in doubt after he expressed a desire to go back to south American but Taylor has no such homesick problems.

“Being at Newcastle is the best thing that has ever happened to me,” Taylor told The Chronicle.

“I am still living the dream of every young lad that is in this city.

“I still cannot describe the feeling when you walk over that line in front of 52,000 fans in a stadium like ours.

“It is what I have always wanted to do. I have to keep pinching myself.”

The Dynamo Kiev striker is expected to leave Dynamo Kiev in the coming months, with the Ukrainian giants openly pursuing Dieumerci Mbokani – who has been linked with West Brom.

The 24-year-old has been linked with the Magpies over the course of the last year or two, and Alan Pardew’s pursuit of attacking players ahead of next season has led to rumours of a move to St James’ Park.

Ideye’s agent, Hootan Ahmadi, says that, as of yet, no English clubs have made an official approach, but that his client would be extremely interested in a move to the Premier League:

“We are waiting for English clubs.” He is quoted by Sky Sports.

“He is still keen on the Premier League, although money will be a lot better abroad.”

Ahmadi went on to claim that there is no rush to make a decision, and that many clubs from across Europe, and further afield, are tracking Ideye:

“Quite a few clubs are interested now in France, Turkey, Germany, Russia and the Middle East.

“We are just seeing what the best option is.”

Ideye started his career in his homeland and has since represented clubs from Switzerland, France and Ukraine.

Could Brown Ideye compliment the abilities of Papiss Cisse?

Magpies chief Alan Pardew is said to have placed the Saint-Etienne star at the very top of his transfer wish list, and was believed to be willing to dedicate a large chunk of his budget to securing a deal.

However, Anzhi are now in the race for the Gabon international, and have the spending power to blow Newcastle out of the water.

The Russians are willing to offer around £25m for the 23-year-old, a figure that his current employers will find hard to resist.

Toon owner Mike Ashley is unlikely to consider matching such a sum, with his policy of snapping up promising stars for reduced fees well known.

Aubameyang was one of Ligue 1’s top talents last term, scoring 19 goals as Saint-Etienne narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification.

A number of other Premier League sides have been linked with the versatile attacker, including both Arsenal and Aston Villa.

Aubameyang is rumoured to be keen on a return to former club AC Milan, but he could be tempted by Anzhi, who will likely offer him a bumper contract.

Newcastle fans, would it be a big blow to miss out on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang?

Monaco could make a move for Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye in the coming months, according to reports from the Daily Star.

The Frenchman has become one of the Premier League’s top creative talents following his 2011 move to St James’ Park, and was a key part of the Magpies’ Europa League qualifying campaign.

But, after a disappointing season last time around, speculation surrounding Cabaye’s future on Tyneside has increased.

Monaco are keen to take advantage of any desire the 27-year-old may have to leave Newcastle, as they look to assemble a squad capable of competing for Ligue 1 honours.

The Mediterranean outfit only secured promotion to the French top flight recently, but have embarked on a spending spree thanks to the backing of their billionaire Russian owner.

The likes of Radamel Falcao, Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez have been snapped up for over £100million, and it seems that the spending will not stop there.

Monaco coach Claudio Ranieri sees Cabaye as somebody who can provide a calming influence in his midfield, and is more than happy to spend big in order to lure him to the Stade Louis II.

The ex-Chelsea boss would also have the backing of the club’s hierarchy, with their CEO, Vadim Vasilyev, admitting that the ex-Lille man is in their thoughts.

“Yohan Cabaye? He is an exciting player,” said Vasilyev.

Newcastle are far from keen to sell, but a big money offer may prove too tempting as they themselves look to bolster their squad this summer.

Shoukd Newcastle fight to hold onto Yohan Cabaye? Or would cashing in while his value is high be a better option?

Tell us what you think below!
