I agree that the European Elite share a somewhat symbiotic relationship with the Champions League but I’m not sure how the competition can be blamed for the financial insecurity of say Barcelona. Without the considerable financial windfall that it gives them, they would be in serious trouble.

However while it appears obvious that regular appearances in the Champions League would create a gap in the domestic leagues, we’ve seen with the likes of FC Nordsjælland that there is room for surprises and it isn’t completely creating a two-tier system in modern football.

For all the good that CL has done the bad far outweighs any benefits.
The CL was created for all of the wrong reasons – prime one being money – it’s influence on domestic league and cup competitions has been cancerous and just like cancer it is even killing those clubs that are perrenial participants. The likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona are technically bankrupt. UEFA have shown themselves to be unfit to manage European football – they lack imagination, courage and the corruption is only surpassed by those sitting in FIFA.
