The French international is believed to be available for as little as £3m this month, with his contract due to expire at the end of the season.
Villa manager Paul Lambert sees him as the ideal man to fill the gap left in his midfield by Stiliyan Petrov’s absence.
Sunderland and Newcastle are also rumoured to be interested, but the Midlanders are hopeful that they can pip their domestic rivals to his signature.
The Villa Park club’s owner Randy Lerner is reportedly unwilling to spend big this month, but Lambert is hopeful that he can persuade him to splash the cash to bolster his squad.
With a number of his current team performing poorly of late, the ex-Norwich manager is keen to add some quality to his ranks and sees Sissoko, who has made nearly 200 career appearances, as the ideal candidate.
He would also fit the club’s policy of nurturing young talent being just 22-years-of-age.
Villa have been linked with Sissoko in the past, with former manager Gerard Houllier believed to have tracked the player.
There have been rumours that former midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker may return to the club, however this is thought to be untrue.
