Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke could do no wrong last season, 23 goals in all competitions, 19 of those coming in the Premier League, made him one of the hottest commodities of the last transfer window. Yet he stayed at Villa Park.
Several Villa supporters feared their leading Belgian international would leave and at one point it appeared even Paul Lambert was resigned to Benteke leaving. There was though a slight hesitancy from rival clubs to cough up the extravagant £25-30 million transfer fee, and Lambert convinced his man the grass wasn’t greener elsewhere, for now.
Benteke initially vindicated this faith and hit the ground running with an impressive start to his second campaign in England. However, now the goals have started drying up the questions have started to arise whether the 23-year-old was just a one-season wonder.
This may be slightly harsh on the £7million signing from Genk but he is in desperate need of a tonic to boost his displays and provide those vital finishes for his team once more.
