The Belgian striker signed a contract extension at the end of last season, but his agent has recently sparked doubt over the forward’s future at Villa Park: “He wants to get ready for the World Cup. For the future, there is time. Currently it is too early to talk about it.” said Eric Kismet, Benteke’s agent.
The forward has been less effective for Villa compared to his debut season in the Premier League, where he ended the campaign with 19 goals from 34 league matches. This year the forward has only managed to net 10 times from 25 appearances.
Belgium are being tipped for a strong World Cup, with the likes of Thibaut Courtois, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku set to star. And Villa executives are aware that a few strong performances in Brazil could be the end for Benteke’s Villa career, especially when club’s can offer more than the £40,000-a-week deal the 6ft 3 striker is currently on at Villa Park.
Tottenham and Arsenal have been linked with Benteke in the past, though neither were able to convince the Belgian to move last summer.
