West Ham’s Ravel Morrison has been the Cottagers’ top target for some time, but it is believed that the East London club are against the idea of selling one of their star names to a side they are in direct competition with to avoid relegation.
As a result Rene Meulensteen has been looking at other targets, and has outlined Defour as a priority.
The 41-capped Belgian international is valued at around £4m, and the Fulham chief is confident that a deal can be struck before the transfer deadline passes.
However, he may have to settle for an initial loan swoop with a view to a permanent transfer at the end of the season, with Porto keen to see if their man’s valuation will rise if he impresses at the World Cup.
Defour is a regular in his national side’s squad, and is expected to represent them in Brazil later this year.
Although he is seen as an ideal alternative to Morrison, Meulensteen is said to be ready to make a fresh offer for the Hammers ace this week.
