Fulham’s Giorgos Karagounis is set for a new deal at Craven Cottage, following his impressive form this season.

The Greek midfielder, who arrived on a free transfer ahead of the current campaign, has made a solid start to Premier League life and become an important member of the Cottagers’ first-team.

Despite being set to turn 36 next month, Martin Jol has revealed that he is looking to extend the veteran’s stay in West London:

“Giorgos loves to play here. And if we feel the moment is right we will sit down with him and offer him a new contract.” He is quoted by the Daily Mail.

“He’s not the youngest. But every time we get other players in, you miss him.

“Last week I didn’t play him because I was annoyed because he was playing for the Greece national team, he played 70 minutes and that is not what you want, so I played Emmanuel Frimpong.”

Karagounis was instrumental in Fulham’s weekend victory over Stoke, a game in which Dimitar Berbatov and Mark Schwarzer took the headlines for the winning goal and a penalty save respectively.

He has also turned in a number of other top-notch displays, quickly becoming a key man under Jol.

Karagounis has played for a number of big European clubs during his career, including the likes of Panathinaikos, Inter Milan and Benfica.

He has also won over 120 caps for Greece, and is still in the national set-up despite his advancing years.
