Fulham midfielder Steve Sidwell wants the London club to offer Brede Hangeland a new contract.

The Norwegian centre-back’s current deal expires at the end of the season and, as of yet, there has been no approach from the Premier League side to extend his stay.

His consistency over the course of the last four years has attracted a number of suitors, who will be keen to pounce should he leave West London on a free transfer.

Sidwell has encouraged Fulham to keep hold of their captain, who he feels is vital to any chances of on-field success:

“You want to keep all of your best players to progress in the Premier League,” he is quoted by SkySports.

“Brede is a natural-born leader and, if you look at his performances week in, week out, he very rarely has a bad game for us.

“His partnership with Aaron Hughes has been instrumental to the club’s success throughout the past few years. We want to keep him here.

“Brede is a stalwart and when he doesn’t play he is sorely missed.

The former Chelsea star went on to praise Hangeland’s off-field role at the club:

“Just having him around the place lifts the players and having him on the pitch, being our skipper, gives everyone a buzz.”

The 31-year-old signed for Fulham in 2008 from FC Copenhagen.
