Newcastle’s summer transfer activity was less than inspiring for the Newcastle fans. Whilst Mike Ashley was unwilling to release the funds to allow Pardew some freedom in the transfer market, he had to make do with loan signings. Whilst Loic Remy has, by and large, been a success, his 14 league goals are about as good as it has got. After selling Yohan Cabaye for in excess of £20 million in January, the club did little to move for a replacement. Losing one of very few players of true quality resulted in the team’s capitulation. It will be necessary to seriously reinvest some of this cash in the summer in order to appease the irate fans, as opposed to dipping into the loan market to improve the squad.
