With rumours rife that Newcastle No.1 Tim Krul could be on his way to Serie A at the end of the season, the Tynesiders have been linked with Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.
You may remember the 24 year-old for his heroic efforts to keep the Royals afloat in the Premier league last season, putting in a particularly sensational performance against Liverpool which Brendan Rodgers described as ‘absolutely staggering’.
But in the Championship, the former England U21 has struggled to hit such impressive heights. Just ten clean sheets in 34 appearances, in turn conceding 41 goals, is hardly the goalkeeping return you’d expect from a young ‘keeper of such heralded potential.
It seems that much of McCarthy’s hype, especially in the tabloids, extends from that single, admittedly unbelievable, showing against the Anfield side. It’s worth noting that the Madjeski No.1 hasn’t come close to the England squad since his only senior call-up in May 2013, despite the obvious limits in depth between the sticks for the Three Lions.
Fellow Championship goalie Kasper Schmeichel would be a far better option for the Magpies, considering he concedes on average less than a goal per game and will be available on a bosman move at the end of the season.
