Reading are set to step up their pursuit of TP Mazembe defender Stoppila Sunzu, according to reports from The Metro.

The Zambian international was thought to be on the verge of joining Arsenal last weekend, but the potential deal fell through, which has alerted Royals chief Brian McDermott.

The Madejski Stadium-based outfit are thought to be keen to draft in a number of fresh faces next month, after dropping to the foot of the Premier League table.

A central-defender is believed to be their top target, with a number of the club’s current options struggling to adapt to Premier League life.

Sunzu appears to fit the bill, with his powerful, athletic frame and admirable reading of the game making him a fearsome defensive option.

After a string of impressive displays, the 23-year-old has been labelled as one of the rising stars of African football.

In the wake of interest from the Gunners, Reading have lodged a £3m bid in hope of tempting TP Mazembe to cash in.

However, it is thought that the club are holding out for a fee of at least £5m.

It’s likely that Sunzu will jump at the chance of a switch to England, and the increased chance of first-team football with newly promoted Reading may swing the odds in their favour.
