Wigan midfielder Ben Watson

Wigan’s chances of staying in the Premier League have been boosted by the news Ben Watson has returned to action for the under-21s.

Watson has been on the sidelines for the last five months after breaking his leg against Liverpool back in November but is now closing in on a return to the first-team squad.

The 27-year-old played 45 minutes as the Latics fought out a 2-2 draw against Huddersfield and as long as he suffers no reaction to the run-out, he looks sure to figure before the season is out.

The return of Watson will come as a huge boost to boss Roberto Martinez who will need as many options as possible as his side battle to stay in the Premier League.
