Wigan manager Roberto Martinez is adamant that he is not preparing for life after James McCarthy.

The 22-year-old midfielder has been attracting the attention of a number of Premier League clubs of late, including Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton, thanks to a series of impressive displays.

It is rumoured that the Gunners are preparing an £8m summer bid for his services, sparking rumours that he could leave the DW Stadium.

McCarthy himself has admitted that he will review his future at the end of the season, and if does depart it would come as a significant blow to Martinez.

But, the Spaniard insists that he is not thinking about selling the Republic of Ireland international:

“I’m not resigned to losing him, what I am resigned to is seeing him enjoying his football, getting stronger and better and grabbing the chance with both hands to use his experience to help us achieve our aims.” He is quoted by The Mirror.

“I think we all know how it works, the question is asked, he gives an answer and then it’s given a little twist.

“He’s an outstanding footballer. He’s a young man who is developing and who is enjoying his development and football.”

Martinez is far from being worried about interest in his midfielder, and is instead flattered:

“I take it as a football compliment and he would not be asked the question if he can move on if he were not doing well. And for us as a football club, it’s a football compliment.”

The Scottish born star joined the Latics from Hamilton in 2009, following a successful stint at the club.

He eventually forced himself into Wigan’s starting XI, and has made over 100 first-team appearances.
