Chelsea Football FanCast 029

Posted by: Chidge, Mon 26th May 2008
  • Length: 41:56 minutes (38.4 MB)
This week’s Chelsea Fancast has Martin and Stuart joining Chidge at Putney Station. The lads give the thumbs down to Didier Drogba and the thumbs up to JT in the fallout from the European Cup Final defeat. Peter Kenyon makes Chidge’s blood boil whilst Stuart tells us all about his trip on the far from magic Moscow bus and the horror of the Moscow Fanzone breakdancers. Also on the menu is who will replace the late and not so lamented Average Can’t. Martin plumps for Hiddink, Stuart for Rijkaard and Chidge goes for Eriksson, but only because he gets good odds at 14-1.

Just got done listening to
Just got done listening to the latest installment to the Chelsea podcast. Well done again Chidge and the whole group. Stuart's bus story was absloutely hilarious. Love to see that video. The driver most have been abseloutely whacked out to be doing that. Glad to hear that there were SOME good memories from Moscow. But down to the important stuff. I have been listening to you guys and a lot other Chelsea fans. A lot of them say they want the "sexy football." To me "sexy football" is unimportant. Yes it is nice to see a player create a goal out of nothing or do some amazing footwork and have a good crack at the ball, but in the end it doesn't matter to me. As long as we walk away from the game with the win and the three points than I am happy. I don't care if how good it looks just as long as the ball is in the back of the net. And I think that most people would agree with me here. At the end of the day we all want to see Chelsea be victorious. I vew "sexy football" as an added bonus. If we have it great! But it's not a necessity and it doesn't always win you games. Barcelona even till the last minute of their game against Man Utd. were trying to pass their way until it got them two feet infront of the net. Or Leo Messi tried dribbling his way through the entire Man Utd defence. And it didn't work out. So this viewpoint really influences who I want as manager. Let's make a generalization here. All Chelsea fans want Jose back. If they had the option of Jose or anyone else I bet every single person would want Jose back because with him we know we will win something. If Jose was a possibility I would bring him back to the Bridge where he belongs. BUT you never know with him. If he would happen to take the Inter job than this is what I would see happening: Rijkaard. (Who i think well get the job. not who I want) He seems to be the favorite to take Avram's position. I believe it was Stuart who said this with Rijkaaard he could be amazing and do wonders, but he might not work out. Those first few seasons at Barca he was spectacular and "winning everything in sight." But since then he has lost the dressing room and that is one thing at Chelsea that cannot happen. Even without Didier Drogba there are still big egos in the Chelsea dressing room. And we can't have a manager that won't stand up to that. But in terms of honours he is very accomplished and would be a very good choice. If it weren't Jose my vote would be (for who I want) Lippi. Here's why: Like I said "sexy football" isn't all that important for me. We know that he has reached success domestically, in Europe, and most recently the World Cup. Look at a very important figure from this World Cup. His team conceded a total of TWO GOALS the entire campaign. Once was an own goal in the US and the other was Zidanes penalty in the Final. On a side note I was in Rome when the USA went up 1-0 against Italy. Not an advantage to have long blonde hair and speak in English at all. That's pretty impresive considering some of the teams that they played. And if we don't play "sexy football" and get by with 1-0's and 2-0's week in and week out that's fine with me. I really don't have a problem with that. If he would come in there would be no if's and's or but's about his ability to manage. And I think he would be respected throughout very quickly. Sorry I keep ranting on and on but there is one last thing that MUST be addressed. Stevie Clarke. Besides John Terry I really don't think there is a man that embodies Chelsea more than Stevie Clarke. You say where were you when we were [*@!$]? (pardon my language). Steve Clarke was there when we were [*@!$]! He commands utter respect from every single player and no doubt played a vital role in Jose's winning seasons. I know he signed a new contract in the fall, but this is someone that we cannot afford to lose. He is irreplaceable by anyone. Great example was Ballack and Drogba vs. Man United. They had a bit of a row on the pitch near the end of the game at to who was going to take that free kick. Not sure if you boys at the Bridge saw this but on the tv they showed Stevie pulling Michael and Didier aside and basically told them to simmer down, and keep composure. As soon as the little chat was done both Michael and Didier were fine. Steve Clarke is one person that CANNOT leave the Bridge no matter who the manager is. Petr Cech is also on that list (with all these mysterious bids from "Big European Clubs") But that's a whole different topic and I don't want to talk your ears off more than I already have. Didier Drogba: goodbye and good riddance. Thank you for your services and here is the door. Sorry it was long but I had a lot to say. I'm looking forward to listening to all you boys talk about the latest happenings at Chelsea all through the summer and into the new season in the fall. Cheers to all!

Seth, Thanks for the
Seth, Thanks for the eloquent analysis & your kind words. I'm right with you about Steve Clarke. I suspect he's been the glue holding it all together in the dressing room this season. I also agree about "sexy football", but I'm not sure Uncle Roman does, so a manager who doesn't deliver on that front may not be around for long.
