Football FanCast reporter Freddie Myers mulls over the daily rumours and rumblings
When Juande Ramos appointed Gus Poyet as his assistant
at Spurs, it seemed a very shrewd move. Not only is Uruguayan widely considered
one of the best young coaches in the game, but he has a great understanding of
not only the club, but the British media in general.
It seemed the perfect scenario for Ramos as he could get on with the job in hand at Tottenham Hotspur, while using Poyet as a shield to prevent any media intrusion. It brought Ramos time, the opportunity to find his feet in this country; however now he has stepped into the spotlight, every single word seems to be misconstrued as Fleet Street look to stir the mix.
Lunchtime bulletins of "Ramos coy over Spurs strike-force", "Ramos looking to cash in" have been infiltrating the news wires as the days breaking stories. What a load of tosh - did they not think to read what he mentioned in the interview with AS? Maybe I was reading a different piece to the majority, but I saw an article this morning that talked of what importance both players were to the football club and how he wants to maintain a strong squad capable of challenging the top 4 next season. Ramos' is certainly no fool and understands that Berbatov may move on this summer as the players has expressed a desire, so what was the Spaniard to do - sit on the fence, or come out and tell the world that Berbatov is moving on - hardly the way to conduct business is it?
Unfortunately this isn't the first time this has happened to Ramos and he is slowly finding to his cost how the British Media works. He may want to go back into Poyet's shadow and leave him in the forefront. I seem to remember the Uruguayan coming out last week claiming that Robbie Keane will not be leaving due to his importance to the football club. A straight answer to a direct question - maybe Fleet Street would do well in asking Gus such questions in future, rather than getting themselves lost in translation.
