Is this the right man to be leading Spurs?

Football FanCast columnist Matt Wright questions the decision to appoint JJ, Vice Captain

If there is one player that has the majority of Spurs fans split, then it has to be Jermaine Jenas. Loved by some, loathed by others; I personally find the player somewhat of an enigma who can on his day look a world beater and on others average at best.

It is a constant theme throughout Jenas' career, where he has always had praise and doubt in equal measures. There must be something about him, given that he has been called up for every international manager throughout his career; however I personally feel he flatters to deceive. Our midfield is desperate for that Steven Gerrard figure in the centre; something we have been missing for some time and a void we are desperate to fill.

I don't question he has the necessary gifts, but I do wonder if the player has a psychological block at times in unleashing them. For me he should be grabbing the game by the scruff on the neck, leading by example, but for me he goes missing far too often, especially when we are up against it. I'm sure I wasn't the only Spurs fan who was somewhat bemused at the decision to appoint Jenas as vice captain ahead of next season.

With doubts about Ledley King's fitness it was widely expected that Jonathon Woodgate was to be named, given his outstanding leadership qualities, however Ramos' decision to appoint Jenas highlights that not only will he be an integral part of next year's midfield, but that the Spaniard maybe looking to play five in the middle.

So what was the thinking behind the appointment and is Ramos playing mind games; hoping to unlock the real Jermaine Jenas from within? I will be honest that looking at our squad of players, I thought the arrival of Modric, Bentley Dos Santos and the possible signing of Arshavin would have knocked Jenas down the pecking order, as we would have needed to bring in a suitable general to complement the attacking nature of the midfield. Whether Ramos has plans to use Jenas in a more of an anchor role, Carrick esque is a possibility, but does he possess the defensive qualities needed?

Am I alone in my bemusement of Jenas' appointment as vice captain? Will the added responsibility see the real JJ stand up and turn into the type of player that many feel he could be?

Should be Woody, cannot

Should be Woody, cannot stand jenas and cannot understand the decision, he hardly leads by example.

Could be an inspired move by

Could be an inspired move by Ramos. I think half the problem with JJ is that he has been bought into the doubters and that has subsequently affected his confidence. A bit of responsibility would do him the world of good.

Of all the pre season shocks

Of all the pre season shocks the idea of Jenas being Vice Captain is the worse. He is not very intelligent, certainly no leader and goes missing all too often. If we want to get into the top four then sell him please and buy a player of quality

blimey..that little [*@!$]

blimey..that little [*@!$] cot the vc job...old ramos must rate im...blinkin interesting innit....jj could get 10 goals a season n work is arse off..love 2 c it....

Think this could be a

Think this could be a masterstroke by Ramos to bring the best out of JJ. If it doesn't work no harm done, Jenas falls down the pecking order and someone else takes the armband if Ledley's unavailable. When JJ is on form he looks a class midfielder. In fact, even when he's not playing well he still has more touches of the ball and covers more ground than any other Spurs player. Statistics show that he is also top five in the premiership for these two areas as well. Last season the midfield missed him when he got injured and when he came back I thought he was playing with an injury as his levels dropped off compared with leading up to the ar5ena1 game.

THIS GUY HAS BEEN GIVEN ALL

THIS GUY HAS BEEN GIVEN ALL THE CHANCES OTHER PLAYERS HAVE NOT HAD THE BLESSING TO GET , HE HAS PROVED HE CAN`T PLAY AT A CONSISTENT LEVEL AND THAT LEVEL BEING PREMIERSHIP FOOTBALL , NEWCASTLE KNEW JUST WHAT THEY WERE DOING WHEN THEY SOLD HIM TO SPURS HE CRIED ABOUT LIVING IN A FISH BOWL LITTLE DID WE KNOW THAT HE BROUGHT THE FISH BOWL WITH HIM AND HE PLAYS INSIDE IT EVERY WEEK LIKE A FECKING FISH THAT GO`S MISSING FOR LONG PERIOD`S OF TIME , THE WORST BUY OUTSIDE REBROV AND HIS FRIEND LENNON IS EVERY BIT AS BAD HE JUST WILL NEVER IMPROVE NO MATTER SHOULD HE REMAIN INJURY FREE FOR THE NEXT 20 YEAR`S HE JUST SEEMS TO BE THE SORT OF PLAYER WHO CAN NOT BE TAUGHT HOW TO IMPROVE HIS GAME ITS A LOST CAUSE !!! GET RID OF BOTH OF THEM NOW RAMOS TELL THEM THEY ARE SURPLUS TO REQUIREMENT YOU WILL GET IN ACCESS OF 15 / 20 MIL FOR BOTH OF THEM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aw, get some perspective

Aw, get some perspective will ya? The Vice Captains position is utterly meaningless anyway. It's a bit like coming second in the egg and spoon...

JJ is the one player who one

JJ is the one player who one minute i am screaming blue murder at for playing very poorly, then the next he performs well... very hit and miss, maybe the responsibility will work, maybe not, but either way he was good in that footy film! lolz

Fully back JJ's appointment.

Fully back JJ's appointment. Tactically he is first class which is the reason why managers love him, and a few fans don't. When we attack, he attacks when we sit back and are more defensive he doesn't get on the ball as much but covers every blade of grass on the pitch. The goals he scores are priceless and he regularly scores against the top four which shows his intelligence. I have no idea why some get on his back. It used to be that if you scored against Arsen*l that was enough for some fans! He has done a hell of a lot more and scored plenty against them.

Rubbish... if there is one

Rubbish... if there is one player in our squad who truely gives himself to Tottenham its JJ, the way he has been linking up with Lennon, Bentley, Giovani and Modric in pre-season has been inspiring, he was our leading goalscorer from midfield last season and the season before that and is alwsys the first player to put one past the arse whenever we play them, well the last couple of games anyway, which for me is enough. the boy has the talent, he plays and pushes himself all the time, he's always pushing us on, driving the team forward on and off the pitch and i stand by the fact that he will be with us for a long time to come, ruling our midfield. He needs a decent player along side him who he as a good understanding with, look at the way he played alongside Carrick and then we sold him, last season we had zokora and huddlestone switching constantly so he had no rhythm... alongside Modric week in, week out he shall be great... he's shown this in preseason, now lets see him do it during the season!
