Football FanCast columnist Matt Wright questions the decision to appoint JJ, Vice Captain
If there is one
player that has the majority of Spurs fans split, then it has to be Jermaine Jenas. Loved by some, loathed by others; I personally find the player somewhat of an enigma who can on his day look a world beater and on others average at best.
It is a constant theme throughout Jenas' career, where he has always had praise and doubt in equal measures. There must be something about him, given that he has been called up for every international manager throughout his career; however I personally feel he flatters to deceive. Our midfield is desperate for that Steven Gerrard figure in the centre; something we have been missing for some time and a void we are desperate to fill.
I don't question he has the necessary gifts, but I do wonder if the player has a psychological block at times in unleashing them. For me he should be grabbing the game by the scruff on the neck, leading by example, but for me he goes missing far too often, especially when we are up against it. I'm sure I wasn't the only Spurs fan who was somewhat bemused at the decision to appoint Jenas as vice captain ahead of next season.
With doubts about Ledley King's fitness it was widely expected that Jonathon Woodgate was to be named, given his outstanding leadership qualities, however Ramos' decision to appoint Jenas highlights that not only will he be an integral part of next year's midfield, but that the Spaniard maybe looking to play five in the middle.
So what was the thinking behind the appointment and is Ramos playing mind games; hoping to unlock the real Jermaine Jenas from within? I will be honest that looking at our squad of players, I thought the arrival of Modric, Bentley Dos Santos and the possible signing of Arshavin would have knocked Jenas down the pecking order, as we would have needed to bring in a suitable general to complement the attacking nature of the midfield. Whether Ramos has plans to use Jenas in a more of an anchor role, Carrick esque is a possibility, but does he possess the defensive qualities needed?
Am I alone in my bemusement of Jenas' appointment as vice captain? Will the added responsibility see the real JJ stand up and turn into the type of player that many feel he could be?
