Football FanCast reporter Freddie Myers mulls over the latest rumours and rumblings at N17
I don't think there is a newspaper that hasn't run with
the story that David Bentley is joining Spurs. Every given day the price goes
up, new players are being lined up in exchange and yet nothing concrete has yet
prevailed. I asked the question last week about how long do Spurs wait before
they conclude that they have had enough. I just wonder in light of Aston Villa's
reported interest, whether Juande Ramos has given up on the deal.
Blackburn are well in their right to hold out for top
dollar for a player who has been key in cementing Rovers' place as a top 8
Premier League side, but a £17m deal involving cash/players is a little steep
for a player, who still has much to prove; especially when there are cheaper
alternatives in the market place.
I was intrigued this morning to see reports on Setanta
that Valencia maybe looking to get started on their cost-cutting exercise at
the Mestalla by touting their Spanish winger Joaquin Sanchez out to potential
suitors. Spurs and Everton are reportedly waiting in the wings, should the
player express a wish to play in the Premier League.
Joaquin Sanchez is something of an enigma in Spanish football, where he has bags of potential, but question remarks remain about his consistency. It is fair to say that he hasn't been able to replicate the form he showed at Real Betis in Valencia, which is one of the reasons he was left out of the Spanish Euro squad, but that has more to do with the differing in styles both teams adopt than his ability, in my opinion.
As you can see from the coverage below, Joaquin certainly
has bags of ability and reminds me very much of a David Ginola in style,
although unlike the Frenchman he is predominately right footed. He is extremely
strong running with the ball and possesses a huge array of skills that I'm sure
will be welcomed at White Hart Lane.
So what do Spurs fans feel about a possible move for Joaquin and would he prove a better alternative to David Bentley? The Spaniard, in my opinion, has more strings to his bow than the Rovers man and will certainly be the cheaper option - I just wonder if Ramos is in agreement and is waiting on his countryman to make his intentions known, before committing to the Bentley deal.
