Is this' technicality' the REAL reason why Spurs have failed to progress?

Football FanCast columnist Matt Wright feels that Spurs hopes of progression are being held back by a small technicality.

When Miguel Veloso came out this morning and mentioned that he was close to moving to England this summer, there was no question of which club he was referring. It is a grave shame in all honesty as we all know what value the Portuguese enforcer would have brought to the Spurs midfield, but not for the first time this summer our prudence and the constant penny pinching has seemingly cost us dear.

It drives me up the wall quite frankly and the constant ‘if only' continually plagues my mind and leaves me extremely resentful towards the club board. The momentum of Ramos' Revolution, which was able to entice the likes of Modric, Gomes and Dos Santos to ply their trades in England, has well and truly finished and the club may now be forced to lower our sights in order to get bodies to the club. A move for the likes of Heskey and Doyle would have seen farcical in the summer, but we may have to accept that will be the quality of player we are now in the market for.

If there is one that seems prevalent in all our failings this summer and the reason so many players seemingly couldn't strike deals at the football club is our rigid wage structure. Why many will commend Spurs for being morally correct and maintaining this standpoint, the reality is that it is preventing us from competing for the top talents in the game and will no doubt prove a stumbling block in keeping out top players at the club. I am not suggesting that we should pay all our players £150k a week and subsequently bankrupt the club, but a little leeway surely needs to be in place as missing out on the services of Diego Milito for an extra £5k a week seems ridiculous, especially if his goals could have proved the difference between success and failure at the end of the season. The Spurs board need to ask themselves if there is any coincidence in that the top four teams in the country also possess the highest wage bills of any other teams in England.

Sometimes you have to ‘speculate to accumulate' to achieve in football and unfortunately that is something we continually have failed to grasp.

Complete nonsense. If we

Complete nonsense. If we followed the Leeds route of paying player ridiculous and unjustified fee's then we would be where they are and considering the financial climate, Levy overall has done well for the Spurs. Yes we've taken a big knock but don't be a prune all your life and start thinking the key is to throw money away on players who may never even make it in this league. We then end up paying a fat wage on a donkey. In my opinion having players like Heskey and a few others with some character and understanding of the British game is exactly what we need. The likes of Veloso will be crap for Spurs unless they have the time to adapt to our game. I've seen Veloso on a number of occasions and he's not particularly amazing, he needs to mature a bit more and maybe on a couple of seasons he will be world class but on the other hand he may end up being a great pretender like so many others. We need a Gareth Barry, a Vierra, someone with some maturity and authority in the middle of the park which will give us some leadership, I don't think we need another non English speaking player with lots of flair that takes time to adjust to life in the Premier league.

This is a very good article

This is a very good article in many ways, but I have to say that I dont agree with all of it.I agree that it was frustrating that we did miss out on some quality names in the summer, due to the wage structure, I dont think its true to say that we are resigned to signing players of so called less quality from here on.If you look at the players signed in the summer, Bentley, Pavluchenko and Modric, these were players that a number of other clubs were weighing up a move for, and in the case of Bentley, he probably could have gone to, and earned more at Anfield, but he chose us. I agree with the club being prudent on the wages front, because the days of boom and massive contracts, are well and truly over, and this will become much more apparent in the January Transfer Window. We have to be careful, we are not Liverpool,we are not Chelsea, we are not Man U, we are not Arsenal, we cant bring in the same revenue as these clubs, due to our 36,000 capacity, and we have yet to make the Champions League, so therefore our Chairman and The Board have to know what out limitations are, to protect the future of our club.

It's annoying that salary

It's annoying that salary capping at THFC has been in existence for over 5 years and it is only now that people recognise this as a problem. In principle, I agree with wage capping but what's the point of pursuing a player when you are not prepared to bend the rules a bit if it's the player you desperately need. All though it has been done to death now, ENIC are a bunch of money grabbing arse holes who do not care about what the fans want as long as they are profitting from THFC's huge fan base.Fans should be putting pressure on ENIC to account for undermining the progress of the squad and demand that they rectify the situation by getting rid of the DOF structure that has ensured they maximise profits at the expense of progress. Please do not settle for another DOF cause it is not a personnel problem it is a structural one.Power to the people.

That is the wrong answer to

That is the wrong answer to why spurs are bottem we spent far more money bought the best players thats why every club is waiting to buy them in january .the real reason wether you or the rest of the fans belive me and my brother inlaw is starting to belive me is drugs there is more deaths in sport at the moment than in all the 50 years of watching sport . The heart attack drug is ephedrine is this just a coincidence or is it the reason i dont no ,All i no its rife as uk sport told me when i reported the duracell bunnies for taking this drug 2 years ago and are still today as are a few more clubs .Look out for sunken faces and red faces and you will be gobsmacked like i was we are playing another enegey team on sunday they wont tire till they are in the changing rooms.

Spot on. Heskey would be a

Spot on. Heskey would be a great buy. We need a Britsih spine to the team.

You can blame Levy; you can

You can blame Levy; you can question Commoli; you can wonder if selling Berbatov so late for the money we wanted really was so wise; or you can maybe say our pre-season schedule wasn't enough to prepare us. But really, when all is said and done, if you look at the players we have we should be doing alot better...and that is only the responsibility of the manager. Even if you say the players are letting themselves down and not performing the way they should, then it is the managers job to give them the kick they need. That's not to say I think we should change him. Against the top teams he does well, and I think he's struggling still with the teams that play in a more 'traditional English' manner. We should allow him as much time as we can afford and be supportive, but clearly there does have to be a cut off point if our top flight status becomes too threatened. And as for you Davspurs, I think it's perfectly clear who IS taking the drugs!

Salary cap means NO

Salary cap means NO Success!!! how else are you able to attract the best players. And certainly not be able to keep them and seen with Carrick, Keane, Berbatov , Arsene (DoF), & why not add Hutton, Bale & Modric, Bentley, woodgate, all capable players whose heads are likely to be turned any time soon
