Football FanCast reporter Freddie Myers mulls
over the latest rumours and rumblings
If there is one thing that I have
respected about Juande Ramos, since he has arrived in England, has been his total
honesty and it is clear he is a man of his word. He never shirks a question,
says it how it is and doesn't leave you second guessing. You can imagine that
is what he is like to his players. Some will respect the honesty while others won't,
but to be fair the latter are the ones who should be shipped out anyway.
He has built up a fantastic reputation
with all his past players both in Spain and by the sounds of it at Tottenham -
even Berbatov christened him the ‘perfect
one' and you certainly feel that once the Spaniard can shape up his squad
to his requirements, then Spurs will be in pretty safe hands
There has been so much rumour and speculation around Berbatov that it has really started to grate with Spurs fans who demanded transparency from the player in order to get to the bottom of the rumblings. It obviously wasn't forthcoming and it's clear the Bulgarian does all his talking through his agent, but at least Ramos has had the decency to enlighten the fans once and for all.
Ramos speaking to ITV
I've spoken to him many times and know exactly what he wants,"
When asked if it is possible to change Berbatov's mind at this stage, he added: "No, I understand perfectly well that big clubs want to sign him.
"Obviously we have to cover our backs in case the player decides to leave and we have to have options to replace him. I would obviously like him to stay here but we don't know how future negotiations will go so it is something I cannot guarantee.
"If there are offers coming in for the player we will see if they convince the club and the player as well."
"What we want is for the player to be happy and enjoy his football. The player has the key to this and it is up to him at the end of the day.
Ramos believes it will be possible to replace Berbatov if he leaves, adding: "Of course there are great players in Europe that can do just as well as Berbatov."
Well it is pretty conclusive that the mercurial Bulgarian is
on his way from N17 and it will be a grave shame as he is one of Europe's top
strikers.
One player is not bigger than a football club and if the player doesn't respect his surroundings then there is no point in keeping him. As Ramos mentioned there are plenty of players who can do just as good a job as him in Europe so although the Spaniard will be sad to lose him, he will have plenty alternatives. So who would you like to see come in to replace Berbatov and will they be a suitable partner alongside Robbie Keane. Eto'o has been muted but I couldn't really see the pair of them together upfront. Would you welcome the return of Kanoute? Is David Villa an adequate replacement or should Ramos move for a Klass-Jan Huntelaar?
We will wait and wonder it's just nice to see Juande Ramos put a line under the whole debate and give the Spurs fans the clarity they deserve.
