Myers mulls over the latest rumours and rumblings
It is probably the worst kept secret in football that Sven will
be axed at the end of the season. The Swede has done a fantastic job in turning
the clubs fortunes around and it really is a scandal that Shinawatra has taken
such action. Supporters are rightly up in arms and it is clear that the players
also share their grievance- there will undoubtedly be a standoff in the coming
weeks and it will be interesting to see if there will be any high profile
players leaving as a result.
You ask a City fan what they see as Sven's greatest legacy
at Eastlands and they will pinpoint the implementing of youth within the first team
squad- he has given players their head and many have taken the opportunity with
open hands. The list is endless and you have to praise the quality of the youth
set-up at Manchester City; a prolific stream of good English talent is coming
through and following their Youth Cup exploits, against Chelsea £12m team,
shows it is a conveyor belt that simply has no intention of stopping.
The obvious star graduates over the years has been the likes of Stephen Ireland, Shaun Wright Phillips and Micah Richards, but the latest player that has taken the spotlight has been the precocious talents of Michael Johnson; an energetic midfielder who has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water and is likely to be rewarded at the end of the month with a full International call-up.
He has been a revelation this season and tremendous alongside Hamann and Elano. He has been likened to a young Steven Gerrard and he certainly does share some of the Liverpool captain's qualities, with his tireless running, drive and his great array of passing abilities- he also has an excellent eye for goal. There is no question that his abilities are going to attract a whole host of admirers and according to reports in the Times this morning; Spurs are monitoring the situation closely.
It would certainly be an excellent signing and coup for Juande Ramos, as Johnson has bags of ability and has plenty more to be unlocked. He will offer that much needed balance in midfield alongside Modric and should a potential move for Diarra fall through then Johnson would be ideal. You don't have to ask a weatherman when it's raining and you certainly don't have to ask a Spurs fan that they have a great need for a dynamic central midfielder.
Would a move for Johnson be welcomed? Should Spurs be in the market for both him and Diarra, rather than one or the other? Would Juande Ramos be looking for greater experience to partner Modric?
