Spurs boss facing up to a possible £8m dilemma

Spurs boss facing up to a possible £8m dilemma

Football FanCast columnist Matt Wright feels that someone has to get hold of Gomes, and quick, to stop this run of form from spiralling out of control.

The media certainly love to jump on the bandwagon and the having a pop at Huerelho Gomes is seemingly the order of the day. High profile mistakes in the past week has seemingly made the Brazilian the finger of ridicule and subsequently they are already lining up replacements as they suggest that Harry Redknapp has already lost faith in the former PSV stopper.

I honestly think that the criticisms of Gomes have been somewhat harsh and despite the three errors against Villa, Udinese and last night against Arsenal has been excellent and has kept Spurs in a lot of games this season. It is clear that he is having a bad week at the office, but how many other players have had them over the past two months and been devoid of criticism.

The problem with goalkeepers, like Robinson found out last year, is that once a couple of mistakes kick in then the media's reaction does little but exasperate the situation. Already the pundits are on Gomes back, the media as mentioned are continually trying to drive a wedge between Harry and the Brazilian, by touting transfer targets, and subsequently it is all down to Gomes to see if he is strong enough mentally to overcome all these added pressures. The attention and spotlight destroyed every ounce of confidence that Paul Robinson had, so we will only know in the coming weeks if it has had such an effect on Gomes and whether he will subsequently become a liability.

So what do Spurs fans feel about Gomes and do you believe the criticism to be justified or a little harsh on the Brazilian this season? There was no question that Harry Redknapp in his post match interview was scornful of the defending at set plays, but is a lot of those problems down to the defence having little confidence in their keeper? Gomes certainly likes to be commanding of his penalty box and, as Corluka found to his cost, doesn't care who gets in his way and you just wonder if the indecision as to who will take crosses is playing on their minds. It is clear that Harry or the keeping coach will have to get hold of the Brazilian to stop it spiralling out of control in the same way it did Robbo, otherwise changes will have to be made come January. I personally feel we have a top class keeper, but once mistakes creep in then it tends to provide the most slippery of slopes and one that subsequently is difficult to climb.

Agreed that Gomes is getting

Agreed that Gomes is getting a rough ride at the moment but he is a quality keeper who just needs a bit of disipline, he sorted James out so he can do the same with Gomes.

He will be sold on I reckon,

He will be sold on I reckon, It says this morning that Foster is No.1 target, although I would prefer David James.

"The finger of ridicule"?

"The finger of ridicule"? New one on me! Anyone who saw his youtube clips knew Gomes was error-prone. We've gone from one extreme to another - Robinson always stayed on his line, but Gomes never does. He needs to learn when to come and when to stay - and not make decisions like he did for The Goons' first goal last night.

Kev - you believe everything

Kev - you believe everything in the papers? Or Harry told you himself that Foster is his target? Personally, think Gomes will be fine once the team is a little more settled around him. It's going to be a little while yet before Harry has a real impact on things, and he is not one to get rid of players without spending time to work with them. David James you would prefer? Yeah - would be great for a season or so. He is too old. And whats to say that Gomes will not iron out the clangers once Harry has his staff on board? Talk of transfer's at the moment is rubbish. Harry is not an impulse buyer. He will know we are unbalanced on the left, and need a little steel in the center (wonder why he is playing the Hud in center mid?). The media will continue to pump names about for transfers, like the whole Defoe back to the lane rubbish. Reporters couldn't even be bothered to find out the rules behind it - and once finally highlighted, its like 'Shock news for Harry - he can't have Defoe!'. Do people really think he was not aware of this? Jer-main man may be a target - but we won't spend big in Jan - max 2/3 players in to balance the side, rest of season Harry will be assessing what he really needs for a challenge.

Gomez is poo. Whats the

Gomez is poo. Whats the worth being a great shot stopper when u continually get caught in no mans land when crosses come in. Get robert green from west ham good shot stopper and claims crosses with assertiveness.

Firstly I do not believe

Firstly I do not believe Gomes is a "great" goalkeeper, never will be, and playing like he is at the moment we would never recoup what we paid for him!I suspect one of the problems is he does not trust the back 4 and sure as hell they do not trust him.I trust Rednapp and I trust him to sort it out same as he will sort everything else out that is what he gets paid for.If he can't then we go down and he gets the sack! I think the phrase "lacking in confidence" is much overused,I do not know what it really means in the context of a football team but if "lack of confidence" is what Gomes is suffering from then (a) is it any wonder given the last two months and (b)it will not do Gomes'confidence any good to read a lot of mindless chatter about his replacement!Somebody said Rednapp redeemed James'career let us see what he can do for Gomes. The two of them have what?two months before the transfer window opens but while Harry is sorting ou Gomes he also has to sort out the back four no good sorting out one and not the other. And no I do not have any suggestions I don't know enough about football in general and spurs in particular but Harry gets a reputed £3million a year and I have to believe he has some of the answers.

I agree. The problem in the

I agree. The problem in the past is that Spurs fans and Tottenham Hotspur F.C. have been susceptible to whatever the media was saying, indeed some within the club seem to have conducted their affairs through the press. Spurs should probably bring in a loan keeper and spend time sorting out Gomes problem areas, because some of the saves he makes are totally the best in the league. I'm not sure who our goalkeeping coach is now, but while 'Arry is bringing all these former players in as coaches in his big tent policy, how about getting Ray Clemence to come and put an arm around our goalkeeper and make him feel loved?

He is not a bad goalkeeper .

He is not a bad goalkeeper . He reminds me of Bruce Grobbelar - he will make a few errors and they will look awful . He has made some tunning saves already and at Chelsea his command of the box was excellent . He needs to work in training with the defence and learn when to come and when to stay in the EPL . If Harry can make James rediscover his form he can vertainly do it with Gomes .
