Tottenham Hotspur
have warned Newcastle United off making an approach for White Hart Lane number
two Gus Poyet, who is one of the favourites to succeed Kevin Keegan.
The Uruguayan is reported to be near the top of the Magpies wish-list, a link that has grown in strength due to Poyet's close relationship with Magpies director of football, Dennis Wise.
However, a Spurs source is quoted as telling The Sun: "Gus is on a long-term contract having only joined the staff a year ago.
"It wouldn't be cheap if Newcastle tried to get him. But it won't even get that far, there's no way they'll get permission to talk to him.
"Gus will be a great number one one day, but he's happy at Spurs and is held in very high regard here."
Meanwhile, Zenit St Petersburg forward Andrei Arshavin has downplayed the chances of him finally being able to join Spurs in the New Year.
He told Sport Express: "It is difficult to speak about a possible transfer in the winter.
"What can I tell you? I had no offers from Zenit to sign a new, improved contract.
"I am a realist and of course everything that happened depresses me. But if people did not want me to move, that is their right."
