POLL:
Mug Punter Morris looks ahead to tomorrow's lunchtime showdown and has a sneaky feeling that Arsenal will nick it.
Right. That's it. I am going to win money this weekend. The fact that I
have done nothing but lose this season so far dictates that by law of
averages I am going to win soon. Okay you and I know this theory is
absolute nonsense, but I don't have much else in the way of hope to
grasp onto so am now clinging to this philosophy with dear life...and a
very malnourished bank account.
This weekend in the premiership throws up my personal favourite fixture of the season. Two giants of the league pitched against each other in a battle filled with all the intensity, passion and skill needed to show why the premiership in my humble opinion displays in all it's glory the greatest attributes the game has to offer in world club football. Yeah that's right it's Wigan vs Stoke. Oh yeah Arsenal are playing Man Utd aswell.
Arsenal Vs. Man Utd
A game that in the past has given us a 21 man brawl (David Seaman apparantley did'nt want to mess up his hair). Pre-match tunnel bullying with angry reactionary bullying by a bigger (but shorter) bully. Ingenious use of a favourite italian dish being used as a frisbee, even though the recipient was'nt aware frisbee was the standard post match warm down exercise between opposing teams. The sight of the poshest man in football (you ever heard Martin Keown speak?) jumping onto a disheartened dutchman, who had just recently been playing human pinball with the other team, like a crazed lunatic. On occassion they also find a bit of time to play football. Great football at that, Giggsy's FA Cup semi final extra time winner, and Thierry Henry's flick and volley spring to mind.
I always anticipate a great game when these two meet, even though now one could argue that the even though both teams are made up of fantastic players some key elements that made this fixture great in the past are now missing. Namely being the old enforcer rivalry of Keane against Viera, or the the simmering hatred Scmeichel and Wright had for each other (I just love watching them sitting together on the same punditry panel), or even to a lesser extent the underlying admiration oddly displayed through the use of no nonsense tackles towards either teams opposing dutch striker. But this game still retains the clash of Ferguson vs Wenger, which I don't know about anyone else but is enough reason for me to have a keen interest.
Given the injuries to Walcott and Adebayor last weekend undoubtedely many will give Arsenal little chance of taking three points from this fixture, but for some strange reason this is exactly what I see happening. If I am being honest I have no idea why I think Arsenal will win this game, my only defence being they are at home to one of their biggest rivals and have a great opportunity, given recent injuries, to show the great mental strength Wenger refers to on occasion. I just have one of those feelings that you can't get away from (probably the main reason as to why the words mug and punter are applied when my name is given), but at odds of 9/4 about an Arsenal home win I'm willing to take the chance.
Elsewhere in the league I see home wins for
- West Ham against Everton,
- Aston Villa against Middlesbro, and
- Hull against Bolton
- Single - Arsenal to beat Man Utd @ 9/4
- Treble - West Ham, Everton Aston Villa home wins @ 8/1 (obviously 10/1 if you can get it on the exchanges.
A must see: Daredevil mouse jumps out of a plane!
