The type of striker that will soften Spurs' blow

Tagged: Tottenham

Football FanCast reporter Freddie Myers mulls over the daily rumours and rumblings

There is no question that the biggest dilemma facing Juande Ramos this summer will be, how does he replace Dimitar Berbatov?

The answer would have been simple and just not sell him, but a gentlemen's agreement is in place that should a club come in with the right offer, then Spurs won't stand in his way. Manchester United is testing the water, with a bid of around £25m and you feel it is only a matter of time before an agreement is reached.

His departure will prove a massive blow for Juande Ramos who hoped to use the Bulgarian to spearhead his new look strike force, which would have seen him as the lone striker with a supporting cast of Dos Santos, Modric and Keane in behind him. It is an expansive system; to say the least, but to make it work you need a strong front man to lead the line. Ramos had that in Berbatov, but now he is likely to have to look elsewhere.

The newspapers have once again been full of it this weekend and some new striking names have entered the fray, as potential replacements, should the Bulgarian get his move. Milito has once again been mentioned, Jan Huntelaar continues to be linked, but the latest target to be named in the Daily Mail this morning is Roque Santa Cruz; a player who proved an absolute sensation at Blackburn Rovers last season.

All credit must go to Mark Hughes for taking a chance on the misfiring Paraguayan who struggled with life in Munich and fortune certainly favoured the brave as Santa Cruz chipped in with some 23goals in 42 games. He settled into the Premier League like a duck to water and interestingly linked up well with David Bentley, which wouldn't have gone unnoticed with Juande Ramos as the Rovers winger is also on the Spaniard's radar. Cruz has all the necessary attributes, extremely strong with his back to goal and could certainly lead the line as a lone star or as a complement for a second striker.

So how do Spurs fans feel about a move for Santa Cruz? Would he be the ideal replacement if Berbatov does leave for Old Trafford? Should Juande Ramos be looking elsewhere?

Our biggest problem is
Our biggest problem is keeping hold of Keane and a strong forward line. Defoe - gone. Berbatov - probably going to Utd. There has been more than just rumbles the past 1.5 seasons regarding Berbatov leaving the lane. Good luck to him. His form 07-08 season wasn't his best in the Premiership. I'm sure him wanting to leave to a Champions League team has had bearing on his performances. He'll go for £26m - £29m Keane - Liverpool now without Crouch have the funds to get him. He supported them as a kid & with a chance to play Champions League football up front with Torres my guess is he'll be off come the beginning of the season. Around £15m will be deal which is very reasonable for one of the Premierships proven best players. We could just end up with Bent & Santos! Cruz would be a great addition to the team especially if Keane is leaving. Spurs have the cash to get the best but unfortunately don't have the Champions League fixture to lure the top players to them. Sol & Carrick have already left Spurs for Champions League football & titles. Berbatov & Keane may join them in fast becoming conveyer belt where Spurs supply to the top boys if they come calling at the right price!

berbatov is in spain but hes
berbatov is in spain but hes not interacting with the rest of the playing group. as the boys go for a run he runs fifteen meters off to the side. its all over as far as dimi is concerned so the sooner we get a replacement the better. in all honesty theres a part of me that says the club will be better off without him. when hes not on his petulance can and does bring down the whole team. just please dont let robbie go too. i think robbie is worth twice the money dimi is. the most underated striker in the premier league.

I'd rather see Klaas-Jan
I'd rather see Klaas-Jan Huntelaar brought in. He's scored 70 goals in 82 matches for Ajax; that's no guarantee for success, but for comparison Ibrahimovic only managed 32 in 73 in his time at Ajax.

why not give bent a run in
why not give bent a run in team. he is a proven striker. cant believe the negativity surrounding him. when he played, which was'nt often, last season, he did okay, chipped in with a few goals as well. when defoe was'nt scoring it was, ' oh, he needs a run in the team.' or,'he's not match fit.'. does'nt bent qualify for these excuses?
