Why the big man could well prove to be the answer to Spurs' prayers

Why the big man could well prove to be the answer to Spurs' prayers

Football FanCast columnist Jake Walters feels it about time that Tom Huddlestone was given his opportunity to play the holding role in the Spurs midfield.

One footballer that has most Spurs fans differing in opinion, then it is big Tom Huddlestone. There is no doubting among anyone that the boy has ability, but the constant question mark that surrounds the player is his apparent lack of mobility around the football pitch - I cannot see the problem myself and feel he is being terribly underused at White Hart Lane.

One of the biggest criticisms levied at Huddleston is this supposed lack of mobility. It is true that he isn't what you call your box to box midfielder, but why does he have to be? I don't ever remember seeing Michael Carrick tearing into the penalty box - he simply kept to his 20yrd zone both sides of the halfway line. Carrick's brief was simple; he was the pivot of the team, the starting point of attacks and always available for a pass to keep possession - it is not as if Tom doesn't share Carrick's talents with a football. All Ramos has to do is discipline Huddlestone and just give him the brief to sit in front of that back four. He continues to persist with the ill disciplined Didier Zokora who continually acts like a headless chicken taken on players on the wing and leaving the defence woeful exposed in his absence. There is no fear of Huddlestone doing this and we would look more solid as a result.

So why do Spurs fans have a big question mark over Tom Huddlestone? You look all the top holding midfielders like Makelele, Diarra and of course Carrick and they hardly put in the seemingly high energy performances that many feel necessary. They go about their jobs with relative ease and go unnoticed; Tom could do this job for our football club and I feel it's a travesty that he hasn't been given the opportunity on a regular basis. We have been struggling big time in this position all season and the likes of Jenas, Zokora, O'Hara have all failed to provide a bit of stability, shape and balance to the midfield. I feel Huddlestone deserves his chance to play the role and given an opportunity to show his worth - who knows, he could possibly save us a few quid in January.

Hudd aint good enough pure

Hudd aint good enough pure and simple and is not better than Zokora at all.

Zokora is useless what you

Zokora is useless what you talking about Jeff. The author is right, the Hudd deserves his chance and the criticisms that shortsighted Spurs fans have of him are totally unfounded.

Huddlestone deserves a

Huddlestone deserves a chance, but it dont think Ramos sees him as a 90 min player and more an impact sub.

Considering the main thing

Considering the main thing we're lacking at the moment is creating something in the final 3rd of the pitch, a few quality balls in to our forwards from Hudd could be just the remedy we need.

Huddlestone is to slow and

Huddlestone is to slow and takes to much time on the ball to ever be succesful in the premiership. In Europe he could be very useful due to the slower tempo of the games but he lacks the pace and energy to ever be a top class holding mid in England...Still he has one hell of a shot on him...could be worth a go till january when we will hopefully bring someone in!

Huddlestone is too slow &

Huddlestone is too slow & can't tackle. He has not developed this weakness in his game despite all the promises he has shown. Against Aston Villa, he and Corluka were responsible for the first goal as they were unable to deal with Ashley Young. A pity that Chimbonda was sold as this would have been easy work for Chimbonda. Zokora is the best tackler Spurs have and the next is O'Hara. Spurs desperately need ball winners and Huddlestone is not one. Neither is Modric or Jenas. Most teams play 5 midfielders (3 defensive and 2 attacking to support a striker) Spurs use only 1(Zokora) who is easily overwhelmed by 3 defensive MF and at least 1 attacking. Zokora gets little or no help from Jenas, Huddlestone or Modric. Spurs will do better and will get balance if a player like Makelele or Lassana Diara pair up with Zokora in the middle.

Realplaya, you just hit the

Realplaya, you just hit the nail on the head! No team can compete in the premiership without at least two ball winners in the centre. Zokora can do the job but we really need someone alongside him, unfortunately Huddlestone isnt good enough to fill that void. I reckon O'Hara could in the long term but it would take a lot of coaching and time to adapt him to that position. Think we're gonna have to spend again in January.

The problem with big tom is

The problem with big tom is that he can't run and he can't tackle and he can't jump. Yes he can pass a ball through the eye of a needle but that alone is not enough. for him to really prove his worth as an international class midfielder he either needs to improve his defensive abilities i.e. jumping and tackling or improve his attacking qualities i.e getting forward with pace and scoring more goals. he probably make a great sweeper if we ever played that formation

How can you say Diarra is

How can you say Diarra is not high energy! This guy is by far the best holding midfielder in the league and we need to do whatever it takes to land him! Its true, Hudd has the ability but does'nt have the legs and Zokora has the legs but not the ability!

Yes your right we do need

Yes your right we do need another holding player with zokora but i think Bale would be a better option. He is a better all round layer than ohara and would bridge the gap between them two and modric. We could then play assoua or however you spell his name at left back with santos playing left and lennon on the right .
