Why Liverpool should attempt to hijack £10m move

Tagged: Liverpool

Football FanCast reporter Freddie Myers mulls over the daily rumours and rumblings

I'm sure if Liverpool were to go on and win the Champions League this year, then the Standard Liege game will remain long in the memory. Quite how Rick Parry and alike are sitting awaiting the Champions League draw tonight in Monaco is anybody's guess, but progress they have large partly to Pepe Reina and Dirk Kuyt's knee.

I'm sure that I was not the only observer of this game last night and was completely baffled at the lack of invention that came from the home side, as Rafa simply set his side to attack on the counter. Whether this was planned or enforced, due to the lack of natural width in the team, is anybody's guess, but they certainly cannot go a whole season without it and they need to be brought in sooner rather than later.

There has been a huge amount of speculation in the past few days that Albert Riera. Having seen the player close hand last season in la Liga, I have to say that I am somewhat baffled at the choice. As good and skilful as Riera is, to suggest that he is the answer to provide some natural width is an oversight in my opinion.

Surely what Liverpool need is raw pace and somebody who can take on the full backs and whip in crosses? I still find it hard to fathom as to why Rafa was persisting in trying to sign Barry ahead of more natural wingers like Wright-Phillips or Bentley, before they moved on, and I feel a move for Riera will do little to address the issues.

I personally feel the best move for Liverpool would be to attempt to hijack James Milner's switch from Newcastle to Villa. Available for the same price as Riera, Milner is one of the most underrated footballers in the country and probably the best crosser of a ball in the Premier League. He is available now, following his transfer request and I believe that Liverpool would be crazy to let the opportunity pass. There could be an argument for signing both him and Riera, for both flanks, but unless the coffers are opened further then it seems unlikely to happen.

So who do Liverpool fans feel should be brought in to fill the void? Do you share my reservations for Albert Riera and would a move for Milner be a far better alternative?

Agree about Riera, plays too
Agree about Riera, plays too narrow for me in much the same way that Barry would have done. Good shout about Milner, excellent player and probably would be cheaper, especially if we threw Pennant to Newcastle.

I have been championing the case for Milner for Months, excellent player and it will be nice to have the last laugh on O'Neill as well.

Who here can honestly say they know enough about Riera??? I mean more than what you've seen on YouTube.... hardly anybody is answer...other than Man City/Espanyol Fans and the Liverpool scouts, you talking out your arse if you think you've seen enough of him to pass judgement. BE HONEST.

100% behind you stan we need
100% behind you stan we need premiership class players and Riera is not one of them.Milner is only a nipper and he will get better and better.I think Paul Anderson should have been given a go on the right also?

He will be another waste of
He will be another waste of money for us.... We should take a risk on Milner and why we haven't made an approach for wright-phillips is beyond me (Figures of £8-£10m) could have been a better option. We still need a left winger if we were to get Milner and hopefully forget a riera and approach someone with premiership experience like Downing if we could get him for £12m and Milner for £3-£5m + Pennant. Both Milner and Downing would relish and improve in a top premiership club like ours !!!!!!!!!

Sorry is this the same
Sorry is this the same Milner that struggled to get in Newcastle's team? He's a right footed player too so that goes against him when you consider it's the left side that needs strengthing. We're covered on the right with Benayoun, Kuyt and even Gerrard more comfortable there than on the left. Does Benayoun look comfortable on the left? No so what is it that makes you think Milner would be good?

I agree with Big Stan and
I agree with Big Stan and Yogi. Firstly only Espanyol and Liverpool scouts know about Riera. He was also good enough to be capped for his country a handful of times. This is the same country in which Cesc Fabregas often doesn't make the starting XI. In the case of Milner, he is a talented right footed player but he has struggled at Newcastle. He is also yet to cement his place as a full senior international and Lord knows the England team needs new life/fresh blood. We have Babel, Gerrard, Kuyt and Yossi. As for the left, we only have Aurelio who prefers the left back position. Riera would strenghten that side and surely if he was good enough to be capped (admittedly didn't make the Euro 2008 squad) for spain (European Champions and Fifa ranked #1) on display of his talent/potential, then he is good enough for Liverpool's left Midfield.

The best solution for
The best solution for Liverpool right now is to give rafa the boot. That's the only solution we need as a matter of fact. It pains my heart to say that my beloved LFC will remain in the doldrums as long as he is the manager. No Milner, no Riera, no Downing, no Barry, will have the same effect at Liverpool as they would at other clubs because benitez stifles his players and acts surprised when they perform consistently poor. LFC players are not allowed to play freely and playing brilliantly today could mean that you might not even be on the bench for the next couple of games while Kuyt runs around on the field like a chicken without a head and is guaranteed his place on the right wing every game. What a clueless fellow!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kuyt scored last night but
Kuyt scored last night but he was a joke for the 120 mins. Why does Rafa persist with Kuyt when he offers so little to the team? I'm sorry Rafa but it's not funny anymore. People wonder why we lack creativity and then you see Kuyt playing on the right of midfield - no skill, no pace, poor technique, no imagination. Rafa's obsession with Kuyt is costing us and you could see Gerrard giving out to Kuyt too in the game. Gerrard knows the weak links. Kuyt scored last night but he won't score many in the league and will do damn all else but pass the ball backwards. Riera will be another average player. No bad, but not good enough to make us into title contenders. I agree Wright Phillips should have been bought. He's not brilliant either, but is well better than Kuyt, Benayoun and Pennant on the right wing. Rafa just doesn't seem to be able to build a team that plays good attacking football consistently. We're too workmanlike and not skillful enough under Benitez. I am quite certain this will be his last season. We all want Rafa to do it, but he is too stubborn and tactically RIGID to win the title. After five years we should be seeing the fruits of his building by now; instead it's the same old lack of creative players and too negative a style.

Totally agree, milner is
Totally agree, milner is proven in the premiership and would be a fantastic signing for just over 10m, Riera does not fill me with any confidence too much of a flair player, we need raw aggresion and pace and milner has it by the bag full, but as usual will the board go for the cheaper option and sacrifice the premiership title, i dont hold much hope of seeing milner in a red shirt before the transfer window closes, hopefully i will be proved wrong!!!!!
