Why Spurs would be WISE to spend their millions elsewhere

Why Spurs would be WISE to spend their millions elsewhere

Football FanCast columnist Freddie Myers mulls over the daily rumours and rumblings

If there is one thing that always amazes me with the British media is how they come up with potential transfer targets. Are they the victim of too much ‘Championship Manager' - suddenly remembering the bargains they picked up over the past months and obviously think they could have a similar impact in the Premier League. It is real finger in the wind stuff, totally random and it seems to be Spurs who are continually the focus of their attentions.

I honestly cannot understand where these highly paid journalists get their logic from. Spurs are a club who have two problem areas on the football pitch - a centre forward and a holding midfielder. Surely the smart money will be on identifying the weaknesses of football clubs and look to find players that are readily available that can come in and fill the necessary void. Not Fleet Street, who consistently this week has cited Spurs' problem area to be a lack of attacking midfielders, wingers and continually linked them to the most random of players. Today's instalment via the News of the World has linked the North Londoners with Alessandro Rosina; a good player he maybe, but certainly nothing they are crying out for.

So why are Spurs, continually linked with attacking midfielders and do you honestly feel it is an area that needs addressing? I feel in Modric, Dos Santos, Lennon and Bentley, Spurs are extremely blessed with a wealth of talent, who could really galvanise the football club if only they had that defensive barrier behind them. Rosina joins a long list that has included the likes of Capel and Dortmund's Kuba in the last few weeks and the sooner that the hacks wake up to where Spurs' real priorities lie, then their rumours will continue to lack creditability. Spurs need to spend big in January no question, but an attacking midfielder is surely not on the list?

The one area we have an

The one area we have an embarrasment of riches is attacking midfield. Diarra must be our top priority in January.

Diarra and Huntellar have to

Diarra and Huntellar have to be our main targets in January, that Italian is no better than what we have already got.

Much has been made of Spurs'

Much has been made of Spurs' need for a defensive midfielder and top-notch striker. Clearly we could use strengthening in these areas but a couple of new bodies won't solve all the problems. We need to play with more determination and drive. The current team should be doing better!

we should go for alonso he

we should go for alonso he is a great player

I wonder why the obvious has

I wonder why the obvious has not been done since last season when all but the fools at SPURS go about chasing attacking mid fielders without a decent holding midfielder and a weak central defence with Ledley's KNOWN injury troubles. I would suggest buying - (1) Claude Makelele (he is experienced and would mentour Zokora, Huddlestone and O'Hara (2) Lassana Diara (young and combative in the midfield) (3) Any decent central defender With these players added, the back 4 will be settled and protected and Spurs will definitely climb up the league table and be a hard nut to crack. Also, the attacking players will be able to concentrate on attacking without fear of exposure. Most PL teams are built on a solid defence and steel in the midfield which SPURS lack and so concede cheap goals. These players if bought will make a BIG difference and add to confidence which is currently rock bottom!

Once we get Hutton back

Once we get Hutton back Corluka can play in the holding midfield role

JD - that was largely

JD - that was largely incomprehensible nonsense. If we get rid of Comolli and the DOF role, who will look after the Academy, the scouting, etc. DC has done a great job in recruiting the likes of Rose, Parrott and Bostock over the last couple of years, but perhaps he should just be moved out of the spotlight a little and have less involvement with first team affairs? Anyway, do you really think Ramos can just hand Levy a list and we go and put in offers? Don't you think we go and watch them first? We've just sacked most of our scouts, so who's gonna do this? Who's going to spot the young players who aren't yet on the radar? Who's going to write the reports on who we should be going for, what their current value is, what their potential is? In some respects, I agree with you. But then it hardly takes a brain surgeon to realise we finished the transfer window with half a squad. We need to sign more players. Contrary to this two bit article, I actually believe we DO need sign an attacking midfielder - someone to play on the left as I think we've worked out by now that Bentley, Bale and gilberto aren't the ans2wer for that position, so I'd go for someone like Capel. As for an inside left and an outside right.... are we going back to the Ardiles days? As someone's already said, when Hutton's back, Corluka will probably play in the holding midfield role, possibly alongside Zokora, with the likes of Modric, GdS and Lennon playing off a lone striker. But as long as Lennon's end product is poor and GdS isn't a regular(and as back-up for him), I think we need 2 more attackers (one right, one left) with pace and ability to run with the ball, create and score goals. We also need a centre half and another striker. I'm not sure why we even bought Bentley as he doesn't seem to fit anywhere into the system that Ramos evidently favours.
