Football FanCast reporter Freddie
Myers mulls over the daily rumours and rumblings
I remember being at a press conference back in I think 2002 when a rather
youthful Samuel Eto'o, who had just given Sol Campbell a torrid afternoon,
declared he would like to dedicate his performance for the Spurs fans. This was
not because the player had a deep love for the football club but the fact the
youngster was keen on a possible big money move to the Premier League, after the
north London club's apparent interest.
The move as we know didn't take place and the two separate ships sailed off
in different directions. Spurs went off through a period of demise under the
stewardship of Glenn Hoddle and David Pleat, while Eto'o became one of Europe's
top and most sought after strikers. Six years on the ‘Fleet Street' radar is
suggesting that both ships are heading back in the same direction and about to
dock in the same port.
I remember watching Eto'o play that day and was thinking that he would just be the latest of a select band of overhyped youngsters who will never fulfil their potential. He just seemed to lack that spark and I am amazed to see how far the player has developed in his years at the Nou Camp. He has transformed all that raw potential to the very maximum and, along with Ronaldinho, has helped move the Catalan club into the dominant force of La Liga in the last 4yrs. There is no real secret that his relationship, as well as Ronaldinho's, has soured with the club and the Cameroon striker has made it known that he is keen to move on and hasn't ruled out the Premier League:
He told skysports.com: "The Premiership is a top league, so to play there will be fantastic and a good challenge.
"I want to be a "Pichichi" (top scorer) there as well. I am a top player and I can play in any country."
Tottenham are one of the clubs reported to be interested and it is a rumour that has been doing the rounds for a long time now. The latest reports today in state that Dan Levy is taking a trip over to Spain to talk with the player's representatives and try and tempt the player to north London. There is no doubting the potential arrival would the set pulses racing among Spurs fans but I just wonder whether the club see a move for Eto'o as being the last throw of the dice to keep Berbatov at the football club.
A Berbatov/Eto'o combination would be a dream partnership as they both complement each other's style and would be a handful for any defence - would this signing convince Berbatov to stay at the club? Should the Bulgarian choose to leave, can you actually see Eto'o alongside Robbie Keane? Would their styles clash or do you believe that Keane has the abilities to adapt his game accordingly? Are Spurs fans excited at the prospect of him arriving, or do you see it as yet another ploy to use the club's name to broker a move elsewhere?
