Jose Mourinho is on the verge of lifting his first major silverware as Manchester United manager, potentially ushering in a new era of success at the club.

The EFL Cup is the least prestigious of English football's three main domestic trophies, but is still an honour nonetheless and given Man United are currently fighting for the FA Cup and Europa League, it could be the springboard for tremendous success in Mourinho's first season.

Standing in their way are Claude Puel's Southampton, who will make Sunday's final far from easy. The Saints have beaten Premier League opposition on every step of their journey to Wembley, not even letting in a goal in the process. That's formidable form and as they have already knocked out Arsenal and Liverpool, both of whom higher than Man United in the table, the Old Trafford side can take nothing for granted.

Despite playing a mid-week European game, Mourinho is likely to field a strong side knowing how important a match this is. But, what tweaks should make to the XI and how should they shape up?

Here are THREE tactical decisions Mourinho must make if his side are to lift the trophy at Wembley...

Move Pogba behind Ibrahimovic

Part of a flat midfield three on Wednesday night away to St. Etienne, superstar Paul Pogba put in a solid enough performance for the Red Devils, helping them to a 1-0 away win that ensured they progressed into the last 16 of the Europa League with no drama.

Southampton are a different prospect to that, though, and Man United will be looking to assert themselves early in the game and put Saints on the back foot from the off. Puel's side are tough to break down, so only sustained pressure across the entire 90 minutes, or even beyond, is going to crack that nut.

To that end, Pogba must play in a more advanced position, behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The two have built quite the understanding this season - Pogba has created five assists for the club so far this term and all of them have been knocked in by Ibrahimovic.

Can this famous double act repeat that on Sunday? Only if given license to do so by Jose Mourinho.

Herrera and Carrick to hold the midfield

Suspended for Wednesday night's Europa League action in France, Ander Herrera should come straight back into the side and provide the defensive base for Paul Pogba to impact the game in the final third, as we mentioned.

He should do that beside Michael Carrick, whose composure compliments the Spaniard's energy and tenacity.

Their combination of slick distribution and combative defensive midfield skills have grounded Manchester United this season and been a vital part of their long unbeaten streaks under Mourinho.

They also bring a calmness to Man United's play, especially Carrick, and that's going to be crucial in the high-stakes atmosphere of Wembley on Sunday.

Unleash Martial on the left hand side

Anthony Martial has had a strange season at Manchester United, often providing moments of brilliance but never quite convincing Mourinho can be relied upon on a regular basis.

He sat out Wednesday's win in France on the bench but did play a big part in the side's 3-0 win against St Etienne at Old Trafford in the first leg.

A goal and three assists in the two games prior to that show that he can be devastating on his day on that left-hand side and he deserves the chance to do it a big cup final on Sunday.

On the wide, expansive Wembley pitch he could shine and really isolate Southampton's defenders either directly with dribbling or on the overlap running off the likes of Paul Pogba.

Is Sunday his moment to shine and deliver huge success for Mourinho?
