While injuries have been Arsenal‘s Achilles heel over past seasons, the current Arsenal side has done well to cope with knocks to key men.
Arsenal are still in with a shot at the league title, something you couldn’t say during recent campaigns, and much of that is down to defensive stability. The centre back pairing of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker has been a rock solid foundation from which Arsenal has enjoyed their best season in recent years.
While Arsenal have managed to grind out results despite injuries to key midfielders and offensive players, it can be argued that the loss of Koscielny would most likely deliver too much of a blow.
The Frenchman has been the club’s stand out performer this season with sterling defensive displays pulling Arsenal out of the fire on many occasions. Sunday’s victory over Tottenham and last week’s draw with Bayern are amongst the most notable performances, with the defender’s heroics gaining him rave reviews.
Koscielny joined the club in 2010 and has been immense since establishing himself as a regular starter. He forged a formidable partnership with Thomas Vermaelen, but when Vermaelen suffered a dip in form and was replaced by Per Mertesacker, Koscielny forged an even more effective partnership with the latter.
The pair have been huge for Arsenal this season, and much of the club’s success has been down to clean sheets and solid performances from the backline.
Arsenal will hope Koscielny can stay fit as the season winds down to the final stretch. With important matches against Chelsea and Manchester City coming up, Arsenal will need their stone wall at the back to be at his best.
His presence will also be key in the FA Cup semi-final against Wigan and there’s only ONE way to watch that match…
