Opponents failing to show up would appear to be the sort of situation found in Sunday League action, but Leeds were in that exact situation yesterday. The Yorkshire giants were set to play Romanian side Viitorul Constanta, only for the Eastern Europeans to seemingly forget about the game in Santa Cristina, Italy!

But instead of simply packing up and heading home, the Whites lined up two XIs to give the supporters who came along something to watch. The side donning Leeds’ gold away shirt won the tie 3-1 thanks to goals from Steve Morison, Rodolph Austin and Noel Hunt, while Matt Smith scored a consolation for the XI sporting United’s white home kit.

Manager Dave Hockaday, speaking before the unorthodox game, said:

“If they don’t turn up we will put on a game for the fans because they deserve it.

“We are ready to play tonight’s game. We have officials, match kit and we are at the ground.”

Matt Smith also paid tribute to the Leeds fans on Twitter…
