Amid the fallout from Sam Allardyce's abrupt parting with the England job, courtesy of some rather crass conversations with undercover journalists, Arsene Wenger has been put in the frame to succeed 'Big Sam' in the long-term.

The Frenchman's Arsenal contract expires at the end of the season and he's now at the age, 66, when managers often decide to move into the somewhat less taxing international game.

Combine his thorough experience of English football with a devotion to attacking play, and plenty are excited about the prospect of 'Le Prof' giving England's struggling stars a few lessons in the beautiful game.

This has got us at FootballFanCast thinking... what would England's starting XI look like with Wenger at the helm?

Of course, we can't predict which players be in England contention come next summer, which seems like the most logical time for Wenger to take over the national team. Nonetheless, there's still plenty of room for speculation, so here's a hypothetical look at the Three Lions starting XI we reckon Wenger would pick.

GOALKEEPER

Arsene Wenger's never really expressed a preference when it comes to goalkeepers. Of those to serve under him at Arsenal, some have been young, others have been old and they've been sourced from all four corners of the globe.

But ever-showing an infatuation with young players, we reckon Wenger would give Stoke City's up-and-coming No.1 Jack Butland the nod. If his superb performances last season are anything to go by, it won't be long before he overtakes Joe Hart anyway.

DEFENCE

Hector Bellerin's overlapping runs are a defining feature of Arsenal's attacking play and England's regular no.2 Kyle Walker is a similar breed, so we don't anticipate much change on the right side of the defence.

On the other flank, however, Wenger's appointment could revitalise the struggling international career of Kieran Gibbs, who has picked up just ten caps since making his Three Lions debut in 2010. That may be a controversial pick, but no left-back understands his philosophy better than the 27-year-old.

Meanwhile, whilst Roy Hodgson only ever utilised John Stones sparingly, Wenger would surely relish the prospect of having a true ball-playing centre-back at his disposal. Likewise, the Arsenal boss tried to sign Chris Smalling from Fulham back in the day, so he's clearly a big fan.

MIDFIELD

A typically Wenger midfield sees three No.10s packed into an incredibly technical engine room. Despite Tottenham allegiances, 'Le Prof' surely can't overlook the enormous potential of Dele Alli, who looks like he'll be an England regular for the next decade, whilst Adam Lallana's style of play is right up his street, with reverse passes and nifty movement aplenty.

Now time to address the elephant in the room - Jack Wilshere. Wenger may have allowed the 24-year-old to leave on loan during the summer, but he's still held in incredibly high regard by the Frenchman and would likely become the poster boy of his England side.

ATTACK

It's been a long time coming but Theo Walcott is finally beginning to look like the superstar Wenger expected when signing him from Southampton over a decade ago. Based on current form, let alone Arsenal allegiances, the winger-forward has to start on England's right-hand side.

It's a similar case for Raheem Sterling, an Arsenal-esque player who has been nothing short of phenomenal since Pep Guardiola took the Manchester City job in the summer, bagging five goals in 10 appearances so far this season.

Up front, meanwhile, we're giving Jamie Vardy the nod, having famously rejected the chance to sign for Wenger's boys during the last transfer window. Clearly, the Frenchman's a big fan of Leicester's star centre-forward.
