Life at Millwall Football Club has never been easy. With a following to rival any in the country and a unique passion for their team, the pressure to deliver is always high. With five consecutive wins, including a 2-1 victory over league leaders Norwich, have put Millwall right in the mix of things at the top. With confidence sky high, Kenny Jackett’s men will be looking to maintain the good form in search of promotion. For one player, life is all smiles at the moment.

Scott Barron began his career at Ipswich Town. After coming up through the academy system he went on to make a number of first team appearances before joining Millwall. Having settled at The New Den, and seemingly over his injury worries, I sat down with him to discuss all things football and life with The Lions.

Ipswich have got one of the best academies in the country. How do you think that helped you become the player you are today?

Some of the lessons I learned at Ipswich will stay with me forever. They have a great set-up their and some fantastic coaches. I can’t really fault it. As a young player you are treated like a professional from day one and that’s how it should be. I had some good years at the club.

How is it to be playing for a club like Millwall, a club with such passionate fans and a reputation as big as some of the Premier League club’s?

The fans are great. You just have to look at last season’s play-off final to see that. There must have been around 50,000 of our fans at that game and it makes you feel proud to be playing for a club that means so much to them.

Do you feel an added amount of pressure to perform because of this?

Yes and no. As a player, you always go out on to the pitch aiming to give everything and yes, you can feel a bit under pressure when things aren’t going right but you know that the fans will get behind you at all times. We lost at Wembley but still got a standing ovation from the fans.

Do you think you can go one-step further this season and gain promotion?

Of course. We beat Norwich last week and that goes to show that we can match any team in this league. We’re on a good run at the moment and everyone is buzzing at the club. We just need to make sure we keep playing as we have been because we know that one slip up could be costly. This league is so tight that we have to keep going until the last game of the season.

Who do you see as your main rivals in the promotion battle?

Well obviously there is Leeds and Norwich. They are both clubs who should be playing Championship football. Charlton are another club who will be hoping to go up. I think the top seven will be the ones fighting for the places. There are only a few points in it and it could change at anytime between now and May.

Has last season’s disappointment at Wembley given you an extra incentive this year?

To get to the final and lose was hard to take. Nobody would want to lose at Wembley but it showed us what we are capable of. The experiences of last season will definitely help us this year and we are all confident that we can get there again this year.

You signed a new contract in the summer. Is that a sign that you are hoping to stay here for a long time?

I’m very happy at the moment. We have a great team spirit, a good manager and the club is showing that they are going places. The club offered me a new contract and I was more than happy to sign. As long as I’m wanted here then I’m more than happy to stay.

Finally, where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hopefully playing at the highest level possible, having experienced a couple of promotions with Millwall. I’ll be 29 then so i’ll be in my prime. We’ll see what happens!

Barron and Co will be hoping that lady luck swings their way this season and they can put the disappointment of Wembley behind them with a promotion success this season.
