FIVE players to complete van Gaal’s Man United squad

Manchester United have wasted no time this summer in addressing the shortcomings in their squad. Louis van Gaal is yet to arrive but the club have already announced the signings of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw.

But the rebuilding won’t end there. Van Gaal will likely be providing the club’s officials with suggestions about where to move next in adding further pieces to the squad. The midfield and defence are still in need of quality replacements for those who have moved on in recent times.

Despite the large outlay on Herrera and Shaw, the club still have plenty to work with in the way of a transfer budget.

Here are five players to round out the squad at Old Trafford this summer.

Angel di Maria

Thomas Vermaelen

Arsenal won’t want to give up Thomas Vermaelen to a local rival, but the Belgian very much looks set to be another addition at Old Trafford later this summer.

The Arsenal captain has struggled for games at the Emirates and sees a move to Old Trafford as an opportunity to kick start his career. United could possibly buy two centre-backs this summer, with Phil Jones and Chris Smalling struggling with both inconsistency and injury. Vermaelen, in that event, would be seen as the cheaper, experienced addition.

If he can get back to his best, the Belgian international would be a very good signing for United.

Paul Pogba

Paul Pogba, Juventus

Paul Pogba is reportedly wanted by clubs throughout Europe, with two fantastic seasons with Juventus behind him and a World Cup which he’s been one of the stars. Pogba very much looks set to become one of the modern greats of the game, able to do it all in the midfield.

Juventus reportedly want £60 million for the young Frenchman, a mammoth fee considering United allowed him to walk for nothing. But the upside is clear, and £60 million for one of Europe’s absolute best must be tempting for a club in United’s position.

Kevin Strootman

Kevin Strootman

Strootman is one of the few midfielders in Europe who would be seen as the perfect signing after United’s acquisition of Ander Herrera. The two would appear to be the perfect tandem in the centre of the pitch.

Strootman, having been offered the captain’s armband for the Dutch national team, clearly has the leadership qualities to further improve United and replace what was lost through Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic’s departures as well as Ryan Giggs’ retirement.

But Roma are putting up a fight, knowing full well the worth of their player and that the best is yet to come. United made a sizeable mistake in passing on Strootman last summer, and any transfer this year will be far more costly than the £14 million PSV received from Roma.

Juan Cuadrado

Juan Cuadrado

Juan Cuadrado was one of Colombia’s standout players at the World Cup, with Barcelona said to be interested in the Fiorentina winger.

Cuadrado would offer a lot of qualities that United are currently lacking on the flanks, namely a consistent supply of goals or assists. While United are not short of pace in the wide positions, they are lacking the trickery of an experienced player like Cuadrado.

The Colombia international will come at a high price, with others interested in his services. But his signing would represent a big step in the right direction in revamping a generally uninspiring squad at Old Trafford.

Angel Di Maria

Angel di Maria

Man United have shown no reservation in spending big this summer, and Angel Di Maria would be another fine addition to the squad at Old Trafford. The Argentine looks to be on his way out of Real Madrid later in the window and has already drawn interest from clubs in England.

The winger would be an instant upgrade at United, with Louis van Gaal’s options looking extremely uninspiring in Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young and Nani. Di Maria would be a return to tradition of world-class wingers at the club.

United will reportedly have to part with a fee close to £40 million, but after the season he’s had in Spain, Di Maria would be well worth the cash.
