Following the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona, Liverpool are being linked with Marco Reus as the Uruguayan’s replacement heading into next season.

It’s well known that Reus has a release clause that only kicks in next summer, but that doesn’t rule out a move this year, with Dortmund able to demand more at present than they’ll receive a year from now.

The trouble is Reus’ ties to the German club and the importance placed on by following the recent departures of Robert Lewandowski and Mario Goetze.

But if Liverpool can get it done, it would be seen as an incredible achievement, especially considering the interest in Reus throughout England and Europe.

Here’s a rundown of five reasons why Liverpool should go all out to sign the German international.

Moving on from Suarez

What a way to move on from Luis Suarez than to sign Marco Reus from Borussia Dortmund.

Liverpool will naturally lament the loss of Suarez to Barcelona, with the club wanting to build on the good season they had. But bringing in the German international would allow the Uruguayan to be forgotten quickly.

Reus also wouldn’t raise the problems the club suffered during Suarez’s time in England – but then that is true for the majority of players plying their trade in European football.

The club have brought in a good fee from the Uruguayan’s sale to Barcelona, and using a little over half of that on Reus’ capture would be seen as a fantastic piece of business.

The star forward the club need to continue their rebuild

Style of Play

Daniel Sturridge may have had the best season of his career last term, but the England international doesn’t have the wow-factor of Suarez. Marco Reus, however, would be an instant replace for the Uruguayan at the club.

With Reus on board, there is no danger of Liverpool’s plans being derailed after selling their talisman. Reus very much covers that role for Dortmund, something which he took on following the announcement of Robert Lewandowski’s move to Bayern Munich.

Going into the Champions League next season, the club very much need an inspiration figure to guide them through the campaign and ensure a strong finish in the league. Reus has hit outstanding numbers during his two seasons at Dortmund and should be able to easily replicate those figures in England.

There’s no doubt he’d have the same effect on the club as Suarez did when he replaced Fernando Torres in 2011.

Versatility

From a footballing perspective, Brendan Rodgers will love Reus’ versatility and ability to play anywhere in the final third. He hasn’t been used there much over the past few seasons, but Reus is extremely comfortable playing at centre-forward, which many had expected him to do at Dortmund next season. He’s a natural in front of goal and can supply for others, either from the wide positions or at No.10.

Reus will also be a good fit in the system Rodgers is currently employing at Anfield, with Liverpool and Dortmund’s game sharing similarities. The German international will close down the opposition high up the pitch and can be deadly on the counterattack.

There’s no doubt that he’d fit in seamlessly at Anfield.

A display of the club’s confidence in Rodgers

Rodgers

Heading into Brendan Rodgers’ third season in charge at Liverpool, the signing of Marco Reus would be a great show of confidence from the club’s hierarchy. They may have already sanctioned deals for Adam Lallana and Mamadou Sakho, two of the club’s most expensive signings under Rodgers, but Reus would be as something different altogether, a show of faith and absolute conviction in Rodgers’ philosophy.

But it will also be a sign that Liverpool are back among the big players in European football. They may have just sold one of the best players in the world in Suarez, but the club are heading back into the Champions League next season, and while that is a good step forward, signing someone of the calibre of Reus would send waves around Europe that Liverpool are very much back at the top of the game.

Because he’s one of Europe’s best

No messing around here, Marco Reus is one of the best players in Europe at the moment, shown by his exceptional form last season for Dortmund and in his debut season with the club in which he helped them to the Champions League final.

The German international has come a long way since moving on from the club’s academy, eventually ending up at Borussia Monchengladbach where he began to establish himself as one of the most exciting forwards in the Bundesliga.

The move back to his childhood club only helped to cement his place as one of the most effective and inspiring forwards in Europe.
