Arsenal and Leicester went into their Sunday lunchtime kick-off knowing that a victory for either side would have huge implications for the remainder of their respective campaigns.

Danny Welbeck's late goal gave Arsenal a dramatic late win, but the Gunners are still two points off the Foxes as we head into an FA Cup weekend. Jamie Vardy's first half goal took his league tally to 19 this season, whilst Leicester's impressive rear guard action deserved more, if it wasn't for an idiotic foul in the dying embers of the second half.

As the Gunners prepare for the Champions League to get back underway, Leicester can focus on their title charge and hope they can continue to perform at a similar level. Ranieri's men risk losing their spirit after such a heart-breaking loss and the Italian will face the biggest challenge of his reign to get his side back into their feisty best before their next league clash.

We bring you FIVE of the things we discovered in the first Super Sunday fixture..

Arsenal's big match bottle was false hope

Arsene Wenger (12)

It would be quite a treat to be a fly on the wall in the final team meeting before a big game, just to see what Arsene Wenger says to his side. So often we see Wenger's team's short on belief and playing in an erratic manner in the biggest of games.

Whether we want to put it down to a lack of experience or a lack of leaders, Welbeck's late goal was a fortunate escape from their poor second half performance.

Keeping Kasper

Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester)

Although he was beaten right at the death, Kasper Schmeichel provided another stunning goalkeeping performance that is, rightly, putting him on a par with his father's heroics in a United shirt.

The stop from Olivier Giroud was arguably the save of the season.

It isn't always the ref's fault..

Referee showing yellow card

Atkinson is not a popular man around the country, but Arsenal fans need reminding that the referee cannot always be blamed for their woe.

On the whole, the attention seeking ref did little wrong and his red card for Danny Simpson was down to stupidity from the defender more than anything else. Fans always want a scapegoat, but Atkinson's big decisions in this game were hardly howlers.

Kante has earned the respect of the world

kante

Already highly valued around Europe, Kante's man of the match performance in such a big game elevates him to another level and the bargain summer signing is currently one of Europe's best central midfield men.

Rio Ferdinand gave the Leicester man some high praise at half time and his all-round combative game is crucial to the way his side play.

Earl Gray could define the PL

Demarai Gray 1

Demarai Gray was brought on once Leicester had gone down to 10 men and the former Birmingham winger, despite some dodgy touches, showed us all how good he can be again.

His box of tricks and soaring pace make him a huge threat in Leicester's rapid counter attacks and the winger could have a pivotal role in the title race. Leicester will face more sides who sit deep against them and a player of this ilk can make all the difference.
