You can accuse Pep Guardiola of many things, but being mainstream definitely isn’t one of them.
The Bayern Munich manager raised a few eyebrows with his team selection for the Schalke game, opting to shove new £5m acquisition Xabi Alonso in at centre half for his club debut.
Of course, the ex-Barca man has previous converting central midfielders to central defenders but a week ago, I bet no-one put money on Alonso being where he is now.
That said, imagine the former Liverpool man spraying balls to the likes of Mario Gotze, Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski. Yikes.
Buy Xabi Alonso. Stick him in at centre half. No Biggy. pic.twitter.com/UU6MBJj3kL
