Manchester United are likely to miss out on Borussia Dortmund’s Matts Hummels if they fail to qualify for the Champions League, according to reports from The Express.

The Red Devils have endured a difficult first season under David Moyes so far, with a succession of poor results having ruled them out of the title race and made booking a spot in top level European competition for next term difficult.

They currently trail fourth placed Liverpool by 11 points, which may be a difficult margin to overturn with just 11 games to play.

With Moyes desperate to land top name players to bolster his underwhelming squad, a lack of Champions League action may hinder his hopes.

One player they are likely to miss out on is Dortmund’s Hummels.

The German international has been mooted as a possible replacement for Nemanja Vidic, who is set to leave when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Barcelona are also keen, and with the La Liga giants able to match his ambitions at a domestic and continental level they appear to be favourites.

United are also looking at a number of other targets, and may struggle to beat rivals to their signatures.
