It’s always a special fixture when Sir Alex Ferguson takes his Manchester United side to Anfield and in 1994, the fiercest rivalry in English football produced an absolute cracker of a game.

At the time, United were miles ahead of Liverpool in terms of league position and all-round quality which showed as the Red Devils raced into a 24-minute 0-3 lead. After Dennis Irwin’s free-kick found its way into the net , the lead looked unassailable and a record victory for United looked on the cards.

But Liverpool produced one of those comebacks which we have seen before from the Kop side and will no doubt see again. Nigel Clough, who did little else in his time at Anfield, struck the ball past Peter Schemeichel twice before Neil Ruddock completed the most unlikely of comebacks 11 minutes from time. The Kop erupted.

Despite Manchester United going on to secure a second successive league title, to all those fans who thought they would to stomach the most embarrassing defeat to their closest rivals, the result felt like a win.
