It has been a funny old day in the Premier League.

Manchester United were thrashed 3-1 at Vicarage Road by an in-form Watford, which condemned them to a third defeat in the space of 8 days. Crystal Palace ran riot against a hapless Stoke who conceded four for the 3rd time this season.

Charlie Austin completed his dream week as he scored Southampton's winner against Swansea to add to his two Europa League goals in mid-week, and in the final game of the day, Tottenham struggled to break down David Moye's Sunderland side but crept over the line in a 1-0 win thanks to Harry Kane's goal.

It looks like it s going to be one of those seasons already, with results being thus far unpredictable and the lower half of the table seemingly able to top the upper when it comes to it.

Not that we are complaining here at FFC as it always makes for a good story, and this week was no exception. Here are 5 things we learnt from today's games ....

Perfect for Palace

benteke

There were many things to praise Crystal Palace for on Sunday as they ran riot against bottom of the table Stoke, including the performance of Andros Townsend and their dominance in the centre of the park.

However the one thing that stuck out for many was the impact of having Christian Benteke up front. His hold up play was excellent all day and he was never afraid to come deep and collect the ball to make things happen. The big Belgian should have an excellent season.

"Defence? Don't know it, sorry"

Crystal Palace v Stoke City - Premier League

Stoke have now conceded 13 goals in 4 games this season, which is an absolutely abysmal record, especially considering Mark Hughes' side were once known as a difficult team to break down.

The Welshman's selection today baffled a few as he had new signing Bruno Martins Indi in the centre, Glen Johnson out on the left (really?) and Geoff Cameron of all people at right-back. Stoke's defence don't look a unit and don't really look like they know what they are doing in all honestly - which is understandable considering 3/4 of the back four were playing out of position.

Sinking United

Watford v Manchester United - Premier League

Did Mourinho have two seasons already at United in disguise as LVG? Because his third season syndrome seems to have set in earlier than usual as 3 losses in 8 days has sunk his and his side's confidence.

United started the season well, but have looked lacklustre the past couple of weeks, with new signings Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic failing to make much of an impact at all, especially the former who is starting to look like the worst £89 million ever spent.

Austin Must Start

Southampton are a better side with this man in the starting XI, without a doubt. Claude Puel has his side playing some nice football, yet in the early etchings of the season they have lacked a clinical finisher in front of goal in the absence of Sadio Mane and Graziano Pelle.

Puel has been starting Nathan Redmond - an out-and-out winger - up front and wondering why they weren't scoring. Charlie Austin is his answer and he should now know that after this week in which he scored two Europa League goals and the winner this weekend.

Kane's back

kane

He has done his usual trick of not turning up for the first few games of the season, however 2 goals in 2 games have signalled the return of the out-of-form England striker.

Spurs will have to rely on him heavily this season once again as summer signing Vincent Janssen - who I predicted as 'flop of the season' just so you know - has failed to deliver thus far and is yet to find his name on the scoresheet. If Spurs really want to mount a serious title challenge Kane needs to keep his run of form going and not drop off the radar again.

However, the worrying looking injury which forced him off in the dying embers of the game could prove to be a big problem for Pochettino in the coming weeks.
