Nintendo is at it again, and this time they’ve come out with a new football video game that is somewhat of a mixture between EA’s FIFA series and Football Manager – in all the right ways.

The combination of 2D characters, minimal tactical changes, and clever gameplay offers gamers the right blend of management and a hands-off, stress-free environment that is ever enticing to gamers looking for something a little different than what they’re accustomed too.

The management options may appear somewhat limited at first glance, but that actually makes the game more appealing, as it eliminates all of the pausing and allows the game to flow more freely than the detailed football games all of us have grown accustomed to.

You can still manage your tactics before the match and at halftime, however, while the game also provides managers with post-match updates to players.

As is the case in all other football video games, the players respond accordingly to how they played both individually and as a team. If a player plays well, they improve. If they don’t, they regress.

One of the biggest qualms many people have with a game like Football Manager is that they provide people with too much information, while in FIFA, the difficulties surround the day-in, day-out management of the overall club.

Pocket Football Club does a great job of offering the best of both worlds while not taking things too far: it has just the right combination of fun gameplay while limiting the managerial aspects that many grow tired of while controlling a club.

Create your own pocket-sized dynasty in Nintendo Pocket Football Club for Nintendo 3DS, available to purchase from the Nintendo eShop for £13.49.
