It appears that Rafa Benitez has finally woken up and smelt the coffee and realises that the loan market is there to be utilised and can be extremely advantageous, especially when your squad is as lightweight as Liverpool’s currently is. The lack of transfer funds at Anfield means that Benitez has little option but to bring in some short term deals, given there is a real battle for a Champions League this season.

The newspapers as you would expect at this time of year has been full of rumours and speculation. At Liverpool we have been linked with no fewer than eleven players in the past fortnight and despite the continual link with Ruud van Nistelrooy, the most prominent links have been with two wingers, who funnily enough both reside in Madrid. Real Madrid’s Rafael van der Vaart has been linked with us for some time; however Atletico Madrid’s Maxi Rodriguez is a new one and is a rumour that has gathered a lot of pace of late.

My view is that both are excellent players, both having their merits and given that they would arrive on a short term loan, it means we have nothing to lose. Rafa clearly wants to add some creativity to the midfield, yet it is hardly unlikely that he’ll move for both therefore it appears to be a straight choice between Rodriguez and Van der Vaart. As I say I am not entirely fussed, as both would be excellent additions, but who do the majority of Liverpool fans believe will be the perfect fit at Anfield to provide that creative edge?
