Arsene Wenger has a reputation for being an astute purchaser in the transfer market. Although his inability to spend big has been often criticised, his ability to find a real gem, and at relatively cheap cost, is second to none among the Premier League and Europe’s most elite clubs. A few which come to mind include Robin van Persie, bought for £2.75million, Sol Campbell for free, and Thierry Henry for £11million.

But there are always exceptions to the rule, and in this case, a number of exceptions, as we have been able to compile a Select XI of the worst Arsenal players from the Wenger era.

Some were simply over-rated, others cost way too much, and a few are a complete mystery of how they came to play for such a prestigious club, but all take pride a place in Wenger’s Worst XI.
